Chelsea James (Howell/Howell) scored a goal with 2:01 remaining in regulation that propelled Richard Stockton (8-7, 4-2 NJAC) to an exciting 2-1 victory over Rutgers-Newark (9-5-1, 2-3 NJAC) on Saturday afternoon. The Ospreys dominated play for the majority of the contest, outshooting the Scarlet Raiders 13-4 for the afternoon in the first of a five-game home stand for Stockton.
Â
On an overcast afternoon, the game was scoreless until the 37:34 mark of the first half when
Mairead McKeary (Cranford/Cranford) scored her second goal of the season to give Stockton a 1-0 lead.
Lexi Stasi (Cranbury/Princeton) flipped a shot on goal that the Scarlet Raiders' goalkeeper failed to handle. McKeary pounced on the loose ball and deposited it for the early lead. The advantage was short-lived however as Rutgers-Newark knotted the score just 52 seconds later. Cristina Estremera took a nice pass from Sara Corson to score an easy tap in for the 1-1 tie that would last until late in the game.
Â
The Ospreys had a couple of quality opportunities in the second half but could not score. James had a shot fly over the crossbar, then
Lindsey Thomas shot one wide left. With 20 minutes remaining, Thomas attempted a shot that failed to reach the far post. James later ended the scoring with her second goal of the season as she received a pass from
Adrianna Boucher (Hamilton/Steinert) and tapped the ball in at the right post with 2:01 on the clock to put the final marker on the board for the 2-1 Stockton victory.
Â
Lauren Haynes (Williamstown/Williamstown) made two saves in picking up her eighth win of the season for the Ospreys. Veronika Tueros kicked out two shots for Rutgers-Newark, with her defense also making a save in the game.
Â
Stockton's next game will be Wednesday night when they face Rowan University as part of a doubleheader. The women's game will begin at 6 pm, with the men facing off immediately following at 8 pm
