#22 Stockton Advances in NCAA Tourney, 72-66

(Radnor, PA) – 22nd-ranked Richard Stockton (24-4) played an efficient offensive game with 47.2 percent shooting and just one turnover on the way to a 72-66 victory over Bowdoin College (ME) (19-6) in an NCAA Tournament first round contest at Cabrini College. Rich Suhr (Toms River/TR East) finished with a game-high 21 points after scoring 18 markers in the second half to lead the Ospreys to their ninth consecutive win and a matchup with Cabrini in the second round of the NCAA Tournament tomorrow at 7 pm.

Josh Blamon (Cinnaminson/Cinnaminson) poured in 20 points and grabbed a team-high eight rebounds while Kevin Johnson (Paulsboro/Paulsboro) contributed 10 points, four rebounds, three assists and a game-high three steals. Suhr and Blamon each shot 6-13 from the field and the duo combined for eight of Stockton's nine three-pointers in the game.

After a tight first 10 minutes, Blamon hit two three-pointers during an 11-0 run that resulted in a 32-18 lead for the Ospreys with 4:21 left in the first half. Bowdoin responded with a 10-2 spurt the rest of the way to trim the Stockton advantage to 34-28 at the half. Blamon led all players with 13 points on 5-9 shooting and the Ospreys went 14-28 (50%) from the floor as a team.

After Bowdoin got within 44-41 five minutes into the second half, Blamon and Suhr each sank three-pointers during a 10-2 spurt that extended the lead to 54-43 with 11:04 to play. Bowdoin got as close as five points three times in the next 10 minutes and actually made it 68-64 with 34 seconds to play but Stockton repelled each advance. The Ospreys scored their last 11 points at the free throw line, going 11-13 in the final 2:34 to prevail 72-66. Blamon and Suhr each went 4-4 from the stripe during that span.

Stockton's victory snapped a nine-game losing streak by NJAC teams in the NCAA Tournament since the Ospreys defeated Franklin & Marshall in the 2009 Final Four. The Ospreys, who improved to 23-15 all-time in NCAA Tournament games, will play fourth-ranked Cabrini tomorrow at 7 pm.
