(Radnor, PA) – 22nd-ranked Richard Stockton (25-4) shot 54.4 percent from the field and upset fourth-ranked Cabrini College (26-2) 85-76 on the Cavaliers' home court to reach the NCAA Tournament Sweet 16.
Josh Blamon (Cinnaminson/Cinnaminson) shot 11-18 (61.1%) from the field and poured in a career-high 31 points while also grabbing a team-high nine rebounds to lead the Ospreys to victory. Stockton advanced to play Morrisville State (NY) on March 14 at a site yet to be determined.
Three more Ospreys reached double figures starting with
Kevin Johnson (Paulsboro/Paulsboro) who tossed in 15 markers, tied his career high with eight rebounds and dished five assists.
Nnamdi Usuwa (Avenel/Colonia) went 4-5 from the floor and 4-5 at the line for an efficient 12 points while
Rich Suhr (Toms River/TR East) netted 10 points. Defensively, Stockton forced 15 turnovers and converted them into 21 points. Prior to the game, Cabrini had been 70-1 at home since the start of the 2009-10 season.
Stockton scored the first six points of the game, three each by Blamon and Suhr, and did not trail in the first 13:33.The Ospreys slipped behind 34-29 with five minutes left in the first half but roared back with a layup by Usuwa then five straight points by Blamon for a 36-34 lead. Cabrini pulled ahead 41-39 but a layup by
James Williams (Englewood/Dwight Morrow) in the closing seconds brought the half to a close in a 41-41 tie. Blamon paced Stockton with 15 first-half points.
The second half featured six ties as the teams exchanged baskets until Stockton took over in the last seven minutes. A layup by Blamon gave the Ospreys the lead for good at 60-58 with 7:05 remaining. Stockton stretched the margin to seven (65-58) as a Usuwa layup and Suhr three-pointer followed. Cabrini cut it to 65-62 but Blamon and
Rameel Johnson (Newark/Science Park) sank jumpers on the next two possessions to boost the lead back to 69-62 with 3:50 to play.
The Ospreys never let Cabrini get within one possession the rest of the way. They scored 12 of their last 16 points at the free throw line to stay in front and knock off the Cavaliers 85-76 for their 10th straight win. Stockton shot a blistering 66.7 percent (14-21) from the field and Blamon scored 16 of the team's 44 points in the second half.
Stockton will face Morrisville State (21-8) on Friday, March 14 in a Sweet 16 bracket that also will feature seventh-ranked Amherst College (25-3) and Plattsburgh State (24-5), whom the Ospreys defeated 78-74 on November 17. The site for those games and the NCAA quarterfinal on March 15 will be announced on Monday.
