Second-Half Surge Propels Stockton to 68-57 Win

Galloway, NJ –Richard Stockton (14-4, 10-1 NJAC) rebounded after a poor shooting first half to surge past visiting Rutgers-Newark (10-8, 6-5 NJAC) 68-57 on Saturday afternoon. The Ospreys shot 54.2 percent (13-24) in the second half after struggling though an uneven first 20 minutes of play. Lauren Alwan (Winslow/Timber Creek) led Stockton with 20 points, to go with a game- and career-high 16 rebounds for her third consecutive double/double.
 
The Ospreys and the Scarlet Raiders exchanged leads in the hard fought first half, forging six ties and four lead changes before Rutgers-Newark was able to put the last nine points on the board to take a 34-29 lead into the break. Alwan paced Stockton with 10 points while Jade Howard led the Scarlet Raiders scoring 14 of her game-high 23 points on 6-9 shooting during the first 20 minutes. Rutgers-Newark nailed 15-27 shots (55.6%) in the half.
 
Stockton pushed the pace of play to begin the second stanza. The Ospreys ran off on a 9-1 run to regain the lead at 38-35 on an Alwan layup before the Scarlet Raiders answered with a three-pointer to tie the game for the final time at 38-38. Stockton was not deterred as they again spirited out on a 12-0 surge to run the advantage to 50-38 at 12:01 of the half.
 
Taylor Christina (Franklinville/Delsea) and Sasha Williams (Cherry Hill/Cherry Hill West) accounted for 11 of the 12 points during the run to essentially put the game away. Rutgers-Newark closed to within five points at 54-49 with 7:12 remaining but could get no closer.
 
Lauren Bowler (Little Silver/Red Bank Regional), Sara Farrell (Marlton/Cherokee) and Alwan combined to sink 7-8 foul shots in the last 1:33 to set the final score of 68-57. The Ospreys' defense was superb in the final period, holding the Scarlet Raiders to just 9-32 (28.1%) shooting and 1-8 (12.5%) from three-point range in the second half.
 
In addition to Alwan's big game, Williams netted 12 markers to go with two blocks and two steals while Christina added 11 points. Christina shot 4-6 from the field including 2-3 from behind the arc. Jazmin Palma (North Bergin/North Bergin) topped the squad with five assists as Stockton won for the seventh time in their last eight games and 13th in their last 15 contests.
 
Howard led all scorers with 23 points while Sharee Gordon grabbed 10 boards off the glass. Maria Simmons scored 13 points, dished five assists and had seven steals in the loss.
 
Stockton's next game will be another home affair when they will host The College of New Jersey on Wednesday night. Game time is scheduled for 6 pm.
