#13 Stockton Upset on Late Three-Point Play

Boxscore

Galloway, NJ – Richard Stockton (16-3, 10-2 NJAC), ranked #13 by D3hoops.com, could not survive a cold shooting second half and a three-point play by Bobby Brackett with two seconds remaining proved to be the difference as the Ospreys fell The College of New Jersey (11-8, 7-5 NJAC) 66-63. The loss snapped a four-game winning streak for the Ospreys while the Lions won for the third straight time.

In a hard-fought first half that featured five ties and five lead changes neither squad was able to open up more than a five-point advantage. The Lions jumped out to a 7-2 lead before Stockton answered to close the gap. The Ospreys trailed 23-22 with 5:37 leaft in the first stanza before closing the half on a 14-8 run to take a 36-31 lead into the locker room. Armin Cane (Pleasantville/Pleasantville) topped Stockton with nine points followed by Josh Blamon (Cinnaminson/Cinnaminson) with eight.

After Blamon opened the second-half scoring, the Lions rallied to tie at 38-38 with seven straight points and then sprinted out on a 15-4 run to take what seemed to be a commanding 53-42 advantage. Stockton scored just four points in 10 minutes but found a spark as Blamon triggered a 9-2 spurt by scoring seven points to bring Stockton within one at 57-56. With Stockton later trailing by five, Cane scored four markers to close the gap to 61-60 with 1:22 to play.

Marcus Harmon (Whitesboro/Middle Twp.) tied the game for the last time at 61-61 with 47.1 seconds remaining by hitting on one of two free throws, setting up the thrilling finish. Jayson Johnson's layup put the Lions back up 63-61 with 22 ticks left on the clock, but Onnir Kendall (Williamstown/Williamstown) hit a floater in the lane that knotted the contest at 63-63 with six seconds left in regulation. The shot was Kendall's only field goal attempt of the night.

After a timeout, the Lions responded as Eric Murdock, Jr. raced up the court and fed Bobby Brackett for the game-winning basket with two seconds left. Brackett's foul shot stretched the lead to three points and Stockton turned the ball over on its last possession to suffer the 66-63 defeat.

Blamon led all scorers with 20 points while Cane added 15 markers. Harmon chipped in with 10 points and a team-high seven rebounds for the Ospreys.

Brackett led four Lions in double figures with 13 points and a game-high 11 rebounds. Johnson and Eric Klacik added 12 points apiece while Skylar Ettin chipped in with 11 markers. Murdock and Klacik dished four assists each.

Stockton will play again on Saturday afternoon as they will face #25 William Paterson in Wayne, NJ. Game time is set for 3 pm.
