BoxscoreUnion, NJ – No. 5 seed Stockton University (12-2-7) advanced to the semifinals of the NJAC Tournament with a 1-0 road win over No. 4 seed Kean University (10-7-2) on Saturday afternoon. The lone goal of the match was scored at 75:32 when a Stockton pass found its way into the net for an own goal. The win extended Stockton's unbeaten streak to nine straight matches (5-0-4).
Both teams clamped down defensively in the tightly-contested game, with neither team able to gain a scoring advantage. The teams went to the locker room scoreless at the half with the Cougars holding a slim 6-5 margin in shots.
Kean got two shots on the Stockton net during the second stanza but Stockton goalkeeper
Nicole Pallante (Brick/Brick Twp.) turned both aside. In the 76th minute,
Alexa Fama (Linwood/Mainland) sent a pass across the front of the Kean net, where a defender inadvertently knocked the ball in during a failed clearing attempt to give Stockton a 1-0 lead on an own goal.
Pallante and the Osprey defense made the marker stand up for the last 14:28 to propel Stockton into the NJAC semifinals.
Mairead McKeary (Cranford/Cranford) and
Marissa Bruno (Toms River/TR East) led the Ospreys with two shots each in the contest. Grace O'Brien fired six attempts to lead the Cougars
Kean outshot Stockton 12-9 overall, with a 5-3 advantage in shots on goal, but the Ospreys were able to come away with the win. Pallante earned her 11th shutout of the season by making five saves in the contest. The whitewash tied her for the third-best season total in school history. K.C. Nunez, who took the loss, kicked out two Osprey shots on the day.
Stockton will take on top-seeded Rowan University in the NJAC semifinals on Tuesday evening at 6 p.m. in Glassboro.
