Stockton Wins Tip-Off Tourney with 80-64 Victory

Galloway, NJ – Stockton University (2-1) used solid defense and a hot-shooting first half to pull away for an 80-64 victory over Gwynedd Mercy (1-3) to win the Stockton Tip-Off Tournament on Saturday afternoon. Jaymere Hadden (Millville/Millville) led three Ospreys in double figures with 20 points. Defensively, Stockton held the Griffins to 32.8% (19-58) shooting from the field and forced 17 turnovers for the game.
 
The Ospreys roared out of the gate to begin the contest, leading by as many as nine points at 22-13 before the Griffins closed the gap. A 15-5 run gave the visitors the lead at 28-27 with 6:06 left in the first half but Stockton responded in a big way.
 
Six points by Armin Cane (Pleasantville/Pleasantville) and two each by Marcus Harmon (Whitesboro/Middle Twp.) and Zavon Johnson (Trenton/West Windsor-Plainsboro South) during a 10-2 spurt gave Stockton the lead back at 37-30. The Ospreys finished the half leading 39-33 behind 11 points by Cane and 10 by Hadden. Stockton shot 15-29 (51.7%) during the first half.
 
The Ospreys kept the pressure on in the second half, starting the stanza with a 10-3 spurt highlighted by two dunks by Maurice Hart (Asbury Park/Asbury Park). Stockton widened the lead to 16 at 53-37 on a layup by Cane with 15:49 remaining and led by double digits for all but seven seconds the rest of the way. Stockton finished the game on a 9-1 sprint to clinch the 80-64 victory.
 
In addition to his 20 markers, Hadden grabbed a team-high eight rebounds, dished three assists and pilfered three steals. Cane also scored 20 points while Harmon chipped in with 12 points and seven boards. The Ospreys went 13-14 (92.9%) from the free throw line and racked up 11 steals.
 
For the Griffins, Julian Hyden scored 17 points and pulled down a game-high 14 rebounds. Aaron Morgan added 15 markers while teammates Darnell Artis and Cedric Elleby scored 12 and 10 points respectively.
 
Hadden was named Most Valuable Player of the Stockton Tip-Off Tournament and was joined by Harmon on the All-Tournament Team. Hyden and Morgan from Gwynedd Mercy, DeShawn Lowman of Neumann and Wayne Lennon of Wesley rounded out the All-Tournament squad.
 
Stockton will open up NJAC play on Tuesday night with a road game at Rowan University at 8 p.m.
