BoxscoreClermont, FL – Stockton University (6-1) won their fourth straight game of the spring with a 4-1 win over St. Mary's (IN) on Thursday afternoon. Stockton avenged their only loss of the week, a 6-3 defeat to the Belles on Monday.
Nicole Tomo (Cedar Grove/Cedar Grove) led the way with two hits and scored three of the four runs for Stockton. The Ospreys also were scheduled to face Wisconsin-Stevens Point in the morning, but overnight rain forced the game to be canceled.
Stockton started quickly as Tomo led off the bottom of the first with a single. After a groundout moved her into scoring position,
Samantha Shockey (Deptford/Deptford) drove her in with a ringing double for a 1-0 lead. Stockton plated another run in the third inning as Tomo walked, took second on a passed ball and scored when St. Mary's committed an error on a
Savannah Riotte (Elizabeth/Elizabeth) sacrifice bunt for a 2-0 lead to give Shockey all the runs that she would need in the circle.
Â
The Ospreys put the game away in their half of the fifth frame, plating two insurance runs. Tomo and Riotte reached on base knocks before Shockey drove in Tomo with her second hit of the day for a 3-0 lead. After a flyout advanced both runners,
Holly Arentowicz (Roxbury/Roxbury) capped the scoring with a RBI sacrifice fly that scored Riotte for a 4-0 advantage. St. Mary's scored a run in the top of the sixth but Shockey was able to shut the door for the win.
Â
Tomo and Shockey each rapped out two hits, with Riotte picking up the only other hit for the Ospreys. Shockey was masterful again in the circle, inducing 12 ground balls with three strikeouts and allowing just two hits over seven innings to move her record to 3-0 on the young season.
Â
The Ospreys will end their Florida trip with two games tomorrow, against Penn State-Behrend at 1 pm and Juniata at 3 pm.
