Boxscore

Galloway, NJ – Stockton University (14-13, 6-9 NJAC) kept their playoff hopes alive with a thrilling 11-9 win over New Jersey City (12-19, 4-11 NJAC) on Thursday afternoon. Four different Ospreys had two RBI each in the contest, which was Stockton's last regular season home game of the year.

The Gothic Knights scored first in the slugfest, plating three runs on three hits and two errors in the top of the first inning. The Ospreys responded with a run of their own on two walks and an error to make it 3-1 after one frame. Stockton took the lead for good in their half of the third inning, scoring five times for a 6-3 lead. RBI hits by Brett Solomen (Harrison Twp./Clearview), Bryce DiPaola (Eastampton/Rancocas Valley), a two-run double by Keith Tappert (Tome River/Toms River East) and a sacrifice fly by Erik Danser (Marlton/Cherokee), plated the markers as Stockton sent 10 batters to the plate in the inning.

Both squads scored twice in the fourth with the Ospreys adding a single tally in the sixth for a 9-5 Stockton lead. The Knights cut the advantage to 9-8 by scoring three times on four hits and two costly Stockton errors in the seventh inning. With two outs in the bottom half, Matt Mangarella (Milltown/Spotswood) walked and a Solomen followed with an infield single. After a wild pitch advanced the runners, George Eisenhart (Harrison Twp./Clearview) smashed a long double to left center, plating both runners for an 11-8 lead. NJCU scored one more time in the eighth before Blaze Gaspari (Cherry Hill/Cherry Hill East) came in to shut the door in the ninth for his third save of the season in the 11-9 triumph.

Solomen led the Ospreys with three hits, three runs and two steals, with Mangarella, Eisenhart and Danser rapping two hits each. Mangarella also scored three times. Tappert, Danser, Eisenhart and Mark Jankowski (Sewell/Washington Twp.) had two RBI each. Mike Bergin (Middletown/Middletown South) picked up his third win of the season, allowing just three earned runs and striking out four in six innings of work on the hill.

For the Gothic Knights, who smacked 18 hits in the game, Dmitri Rueger had four hits, while Alex Weinstein and Eric Giordano both rapped out three safeties. Delio Coutinho suffered the loss tossing the first five innings.

Stockton will play at New Jersey City tomorrow to finish up the home-and-home series. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 pm.
