Stockton Ends Regular Season with Split

Game 1 / Game 2

Newark, NJ – Stockton University (15-15, 7-11 NJAC) concluded the regular season by splitting an NJAC doubleheader at Rutgers-Newark (12-26, 2-16). The Ospreys won the opener 5-4 but suffered a 6-2 setback in the nightcap. George Eisenhart (Harrison Twp./Clearview) led Stockton with four hits on the day, including his first home run of the season.

Eisenhart went 3-5 with three RBI and two runs in the first game. Dan Sweeney (Middletown/Middletown South) and Erik Danser (Marlton/Cherokee) added two hits apiece, including a double and an RBI for Danser. Winning pitcher Aidan Ryan (Cedar Run/Msgr. Donovan) improved to 5-2, allowing four runs with four strikeouts in six innings pitched. Blaze Gaspari (Cherry Hill/CH East) tossed a perfect ninth inning for his fourth save of the season.

The Ospreys quickly took the lead on RBI singles by Keith Tappert (Toms River/TR East) and Danser in the top of the first. Rutgers-Newark tied the game with two runs in the bottom half and pulled ahead 4-2 with two tallies in the fourth frame.

Stockton regained the lead in the top of the seventh. Sweeney singled and Vaughn Champion (Galloway/Absegami) reached on a fielder's choice, setting the stage for Eisenhart to blast a three-run homer that put the Ospreys on top 5-4. Rutgers-Newark left the tying run on base in the seventh and eighth frames before Gaspari retired three straight batters in the ninth for the 5-4 triumph.

Champion and Bryan Bessinger (Burlington Twp./Burlington Twp.) each knocked two hits in the second game. Eisenhart doubled and Brett Solomen (Harrison Twp./Clearview) walked as each player boosted his reached-base streak to 30 games.

Rutgers-Newark scored three runs in the second inning, one in the third and two in the fourth for a 6-0 count. The Ospreys averted the shutout with two runs in the top of the ninth. Danser led off with a single and Mark Jankowski (Sewell/Washington Twp.) followed with his first home run of the season, plating the only markers for Stockton in the 6-2 defeat.

Stockton did not qualify for the NJAC tournament but is eligible for a possible invitation to the ECAC Metro tournament. The ECAC bracket will be announced on May 4.
