BoxscoreChester, PA – Stockton University head men's soccer coach
Greg Ruttler collected his first career win in his first game as a college head coach as the Ospreys (1-0) kicked off the 2015 season with a 2-1 win over Widener (0-1).
Clevon McPherson (Kingston, JAM/Pemberton (NJ)) scored the game-winning goal in the second half and
Alex Kourahanis (Sicklerville/Timber Creek) also netted a goal for the Ospreys.
Kourahanis got Stockton off to a great start with a marker just 3:27 into the match. Kourahanis received a long pass from
Anthony Colofranson (Woodbury Hts./Gateway) and beat Widener goalie David Sousa inside the right post. The lead lasted until 5:50 remained in the first half when Tori Remondelli converted a penalty kick to knot the score at 1-1.
The deadlock held until McPherson headed home a corner kick by
Mike DeFeo (Sicklerville/Timber Creek) at 65:04 for the eventual game-winner. The Ospreys protected the lead by limiting Widener to just two shots the rest of the way en route to the 2-1 victory.
Widener outshot Stockton 16-9 but the Ospreys were efficient, scoring on their only two shots on goal. Stockton goalkeeper
Bobby Varga (Toms River/TR East) earned the win with four saves. Ruttler took over as head coach this season after nine years on the Stockton staff. He played at Stockton from 1998-2001 and is a member of the Stockton Athletics Hall of Fame.
Stockton will compete in the Turk DC Classic at Catholic University this weekend. The Ospreys will face Catholic on Friday at 1 pm and Washington & Lee on Saturday at 1 pm.
