Stockton Edges Catholic 2-1 in Double Overtime

Boxscore

Washington, DC – Stockton University (2-0) scored late in the second half to force overtime and then prevailed 2-1 in double-OT over host Catholic University (0-2) in the first game of the Turk DC Classic. Freshman Steven Tobolski (Vineland/Vineland) made his first career goal a memorable one as he netted the game-winner in the second overtime.

Alex Kourahanis (Sicklerville/Timber Creek) scored for the second consecutive game and Stockton goalkeeper Bobby Varga (Toms River/TR East) earned his second straight win with four saves. Statistically, the game was fairly even, with the Ospreys holding slight advantages of 15-14 in shots and 6-4 in corners.

Catholic struck first as Nick Joeston hit the net on a volley shot with 30:30 gone in the first half. Stockton outshot the Cardinals 5-4 in the period but trailed 1-0 at the break. Chimaobi Ikwuagwu (Camden, DE/Caesar Rodney) nearly tied the game at the 73-minute mark on a shot that hit the post. The Ospreys finally broke through with just 8:17 remaining as Kourahanis fired a 20-yard shot inside the right post to knot the game at 1-1. Bobby Spracklin (Eastampton/Rancocas Valley) assisted on the tally.

Catholic registered the only shot of the first overtime but the attempt was wide. Tobolski and Tim Sost (Egg Harbor Twp./EHT) reentered the game as substitutes nearly midway through the second overtime and combined on the winning goal just over a minute later. Tobolski scored on a header with an assist by Sost with 4:34 left in the period to give Stockton the 2-1 sudden-victory triumph.

Stockton will continue play in the Turk DC Classic at Catholic tomorrow with a game against Washington & Lee (VA) at 1 pm.
