Stockton Snaps Losing Streak, 84-71

Galloway, NJ – Stockton University (10-5, 5-3 NJAC) exploded for 52 second-half points and snapped a three-game losing skid with an 84-71 victory over Montclair State (6-8, 3-5 NJAC) on Wednesday night. Armin Cane (Pleasantville/Pleasantville) led four Ospreys in double figures with season-high 27 points on the night. Stockton shot 17-28 (60.7%) from the field and 14-17 (82.4%) from the free throw line during the second-half surge.
 
The Ospreys fell behind early to the Red Hawks but never trailed by more than five points before Stockton put on their first spurt of the night. With Montclair State leading 16-11 with 11:57 left in the first period, the Ospreys ran off 12 straight points led by Zavon Johnson (Trenton/West Windsor-Plainsboro South) and Maurice Hart (Asbury Park/Asbury Park) with five markers each for a 23-16 lead.
 
The Red Hawks were not to be outdone as they responded with a 13-5 sprint to regain the lead at 29-28 with 2:48 to play. Two foul shots by Hart and a jumper by Jaymere Hadden (Millville/Millville) gave Stockton the lead at the break, 32-31.
 
The Ospreys came out of the break on fire, scoring the first nine points in a span of 2:05 on a pair of three-pointers by Cane and another from behind the arc by Hadden assisted by Cane, for a quick 41-31 lead. Stockton stretched the advantage to 53-35 at 10:48 before Montclair slowly cut into the lead. A 25-10 run brought the Red Hawks back to within three points at 63-60 with 5:05 remaining in regulation, forcing a timeout by Stockton.
 
Stockton responded with a 9-0 run on baskets by Hadden, freshman Kashaun Barnes (Toms River/Manchester Twp.) and five points by Cane to give Stockton a 72-60 cushion with 3:04 left to play. The Ospreys sealed the game by shooting 8-10 at the charity stripe during the final minutes to set the final score at 84-71 and snap the three-game skid.
 
Cane scored 18 of his game-high 27 markers in the second half. Cane also added game highs of eight rebounds and four assists while pilfering three steals. Hadden scored a career-high 24 markers, with Hart garnering 14 points and seven boards. Barnes scored a career-high 12 points and led all players with four steals.
 
Shaun Russell led the Red Hawks with 24 points while Brandon Channer and Erick Loften-Harris added 13 and 11 points respectively. Aaron Williams tallied 10 points, rounding out a quartet of double-figure scorers for Montclair State.
 
Stockton will travel to Kean for their next contest on Saturday afternoon. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
