BoxscoreAllentown, PA – Stockton University (9-2) played its first game in two weeks and defeated Alvernia (5-6) 62-56 in the opening round of the Al Senavitis Tournament at DeSales University.
Armin Cane (Pleasantville/Pleasantville) and
Jaymere Hadden (Millville/Millville) led the Ospreys to their sixth straight win with 14 points apiece.
Cane scored efficiently, shooting 5-8 from the floor, including 2-3 on three-pointers, and a perfect 2-2 at the line.
Maurice Hart (Asbury Park/Asbury Park) reached double figures with 10 points and pilfered a team-high three steals. The Ospreys shot 49 percent from the field and doubled Alvernia 28-14 on points in the paint during a close game that featured 10 lead changes.
Cane and Hadden each scored five early points as Stockton built a 16-8 lead. Alvernia responded with a 10-2 run to forge an 18-18 tie but the Ospreys followed with a 7-2 spurt. Cane broke the tie and
Zavon Johnson (Trenton/WW-Plainsboro South) scored Stockton's last five points of the half for a 25-20 advantage at intermission. Cane paced the Ospreys with seven first-half points.
The game was close throughout the second half, with 10 lead changes before Stockton took control in the closing minutes. The Ospreys trailed by four with 10 minutes to play and finally took the lead for good on a basket by Hadden with 4:21 on the clock that snapped a 46-46 tie. Hadden followed with a three-point play that was part of a 10-2 run that put the Ospreys on top 56-48 at the 2:25 mark.
Stockton went just 4-7 at the line in the last two minutes but held the lead by at least five points on the way to their sixth consecutive win, 62-56. The Ospreys shot 51.9 percent from the floor (14-27) in the second half.
Stockton will face Berkeley College (NY), which edged host DeSales 93-89 in double-OT, in the championship game of the Al Senavitis Tournament tomorrow at 4 p.m.
