Stockton Rally Falls Just Short

Boxscore

Gwynedd Valley, PA – Stockton University (6-5) staged a furious rally from a four-goal deficit but the hole proved to be just a little too deep and the Ospreys fell to Gwynedd Mercy (7-4) by a 6-5 score. Laura Olbrich (Pittsgrove/A.P. Schalick) led the comeback try with two goals.

Gwynedd Mercy's Melissa Russo scored at the 24-second mark and again with 8:03 gone to put Stockton down 2-0 early. Just 2:26 after the second Griffins' tally, Leah Davies (Ocean City/Ocean City) scored her first goal of the season to make it a 2-1 game.

Gwynedd Mercy pumped in the next three goals for a 5-1 count before Olbrich scored her first of the night with 3:12 left in the first half. The Ospreys trailed 5-2 at the end of the high-scoring stanza.

Russo completed her hat trick 8:44 into the second half and Stockton' deficit was back to four at 6-2. The Ospreys sprang to life with three goals in 7:18 to pull within one. Jacquie Fenton (Ocean City/Ocean City) started the run with her first goal in 28 career games in a Stockton uniform and Sarah Gawrysiak (Haddon Twp./Haddon Twp.) assisted.

Brooke Hunt (Medford/Cherokee) got the Ospreys within 6-4 by scoring on a rebound, and when Olbrich scored just 1:04 later, suddenly Stockton trailed by only one at 6-5 with 11:42 remaining. Unfortunately, the comeback stalled and the Ospreys were unable to register a shot the rest of the way, falling one goal short.

Freshman goalkeeper Niya Calloway (Matawan/Matawan) made her college debut, coming on in relief of starter Emily Sorochynskyj (Boonton/Boonton) after 30:33. Calloway played the last 39:27 and made seven saves while allowing just one goal to give her teammates a chance to come back.

After playing five of their last six on the road, Stockton will host William Paterson in an NJAC game on Saturday at noon.
