Frederick, MD – Stockton University (5-4) wrapped up its stay at the Rotary of Frederick Holiday Classic hosted by Hood College with a 65-59 victory over Randolph College (VA) (3-7). The win gave the Ospreys consecutive victories for the first time this season. Nearly one-third of Stockton's points, 21 of 65, came off 15 Randolph turnovers.
Tom Catanoso (Cape May CH/Middle Twp.) hit three three-pointers and tied for game-high honors with 14 points.
Zavon Johnson (Trenton/West Windsor Plainsboro South) also reached double digits with 10 points.
Brandon Hamilton (Camden/Paulsboro) chipped in with nine points and tied his career high with nine rebounds.
Stockton struggled throughout the first half, shooting just 27 percent from the floor. The Ospreys trailed by as much as 14 but later pulled within 34-28 at the break after three-pointers by Hamilton and Johnson in the last 40 seconds. Catanoso paced Stockton with eight first-half points.
The Ospreys began the second half with an 8-0 spurt that gave them their first lead of the game, 36-34. Randolph briefly went back on top 38-36 before Stockton surged in front with a 17-4 run. Hamilton led the charge with four points, four rebounds and a block.
Stockton led 53-42 with 9:06 remaining but saw Randolph rally within one four minutes later. Layups by Hamilton and
Darius Jerkins (Somers Point/Mainland), who scored all eight of his points in the second half, ended the threat. Randolph closed the gap to 61-59 but missed its next three shots and committed one turnover before the Ospreys went 4-4 at the line in the last 30 seconds to seal the 65-59 victory.
At the conclusion of the four-game tourney, Johnson and
Kashaun Barnes (Toms River/Manchester Twp.) were selected to the All-Tournament Team.
Stockton will be off until December 29-30 when the Ospreys compete in the Holiday Inn College Park Classic at Catholic University. Stockton takes on Dickinson in the first round.
