Stockton Falls to Catholic in Tournament Final

Boxscore

Washington, DC – Stockton University (6-5) saw its three-game winning streak come to an end with an 81-70 defeat to Catholic University (9-2) in the championship game of the Holiday Inn College Park Classic, which the Cardinals hosted. Khaliq Ford (Millville/Millville) and Tom Catanoso (Cape May CH/Middle Twp.) were selected to the All-Tournament Team.

Two Ospreys hit double figures as Ford paced Stockton with 19 points followed by Maurice Hart (Asbury Park/Asbury Park) with 18 counters in his second game since rejoining the team. Catanoso dished a career-high 10 assists while Hart grabbed a team-high seven rebounds. Ford went 3-4 (75%) from three-point range, however the rest of his teammates were a combined 5-23 (21.7%).

Stockton struggled at the outset, scoring just seven points in the first eight minutes and falling behind 17-7. Hart then tallied six straight points and Ford followed with a three-pointer to cap a 9-0 run that closed the gap to 17-16. Catholic regained the momentum later in the half and opened up a 10-point advantage before Ford closed the period with a three-pointer to lower Stockton's deficit to seven, 40-33, at intermission.

Catholic scored the first five points of the second half for a 45-33 count, but the Ospreys answered with eight straight points and were within 45-41 after a jumper by Ford at the 15:18 mark. The Cardinals halted the comeback try with five markers in a row and Stockton never got within six the rest of the way.

A 13-1 Catholic run later brought the margin to its peak, 18 at 67-49, with 7:16 remaining. The Ospreys outscored the Cardinals 21-14 in the last seven-plus minutes but were unable to make a serious dent and suffered the 81-70 setback.

Stockton will be back in action for an NJAC game at Rutgers-Newark on Wednesday, January 4 at 8 p.m.
