Jaymere Hadden (Millville/Millville) scored the go-ahead basket with 34 seconds remaining and the Ospreys (15-5, 10-3 NJAC) topped Rutgers-Newark (14-6, 9-4) 66-63. With its sixth consecutive win, Stockton moved into sole possession of second place in the NJAC, one game ahead of the Scarlet Raiders and Ramapo.
Armin Cane (Pleasantville/Pleasantville) led the Ospreys with a team-high 18 points and
Marcus Harmon (Whitesboro/Middle Twp.) chipped in with 16 markers. A trio of Stockton players finished with nine points apiece, including
Darius Jerkins (Somers Point/Mainland) who also snatched a team-high seven rebounds.
Stockton trailed 63-62 in the final minute, its only deficit of the game, before Hadden's layup at the 34-second mark put the Ospreys on top 64-63. Cane rebounded a missed Rutgers-Newark three-pointer and fed Hadden for another layup to make it 66-63 with 14 seconds left. The Scarlet Raiders had a chance to tie in the final seconds but one more three-point try was off the mark and Stockton prevailed 66-63.
In the first half, Stockton led 26-15 after a layup by
Maurice Hart (Asbury Park/Asbury Park) for the first two of his nine points in the game. Rutgers-Newark pulled within four points twice before the Ospreys took a 33-28 lead into halftime. Cane shot 6-7 from the floor for 14 first-half points to lead everyone.
Stockton extended the margin back to eight at 36-28 in the first two minutes of the second half but Rutgers-Newark reeled off the next eight points for the first of six ties in the stanza. The Ospreys later led 53-46 after a layup by Cane with 6:43 on the clock before the game tightened down the stretch.
After Hart put the Ospreys ahead 62-60 on a layup at 2:23, Rutgers-Newark scored the next three points for a 63-62 edge with 41 seconds to play. Stockton needed just seven seconds to regain the lead on Hadden's layup, and he added another 20 seconds after to finish with nine points on the night.
Stockton will be on the road again on Wednesday when the Ospreys visit Rutgers-Camden for an NJAC game at 8 p.m.
