Stockton Falls Twice on Opening Day

Game 1 / Game 2

Swarthmore, PA – Stockton University (0-2) suffered a pair of defeats to Swarthmore (2-0) on a sunny but chilly opening day for the 2016 season. The Ospreys fell 4-0 in the first game and then suffered a heartbreaker in the nightcap as they were edged 5-4 in nine innings.

Vaughn Champion (Galloway/Absegami) led off the opener with a single but Stockton did not record another hit in the game. Champion also drew a walk in the sixth frame, which was the Ospreys' best scoring chance.

Walks to Bryce DiPaola (Eastampton/Rancocas Valley), Champion and Matt Mangarella (Milltown/Spotswood) loaded the bases with none out but a home-to-first double play followed by a groundout kept Stockton off the board.

The Ospreys knocked seven hits in the nightcap, one apiece by seven different players. Dan Sweeney (Middletown/Middletown South) doubled for the lone extra-base hit and also scored once. Matt Poinsett (Ocean Gate/Msgr. Donovan) added a hit, a walk and a run scored.

Stockton fell behind 2-0 in the bottom of the first and tied the game with two runs in the fourth. Sweeney doubled and scored on an error to make it 2-1 and DiPaola stroked an RBI single for the 2-2 tie. The Garnet answered right back with a run in the top of the fifth for a 3-2 lead.

The Ospreys tied the game again in the bottom of the fifth. Mangarella walked and moved all the way to third on two wild pitches. He then scored on the first career hit by freshman Joe LaCava (Toms River/TR North) for a 3-3 count, which remained until the eighth frame.

Poinsett started the eighth inning by getting all the way to third on an error in the Swarthmore outfield. Tyler Hobbs (Brick/Brick Memorial) followed with a sacrifice fly to give Stockton its first lead at 4-3. Swarthmore stayed alive with a run in the bottom half and then downed the Ospreys 5-4 on a walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth.

Stockton will play its home opener on Tuesday when the Ospreys host Cairn at 3 p.m.
