Stockton Drops Home Opener 11-6

Boxscore

Galloway, NJ – Stockton University (0-3) played their home opener and suffered an 11-6 defeat at the hands of Cairn University (1-0) on Tuesday afternoon. Matt Poinsett (Ocean Gate/Msgr. Donovan) drove in two of the Ospreys' six runs on the afternoon and eight different Ospreys had one hit apiece on the day. Vaughn Champion (Galloway/Absegami) was 1-4 with a run, RBI and a walk.

After a scoreless first two frames, the Highlanders plated a single run in the top of the third and Stockton responded in the bottom half. Bryce DiPaola (Eastampton/Rancocas Valley) dropped down a bunt single and advanced to third base on the ensuing errant throw. Champion plated DiPaola with an RBI single to knot the game at 1-1.

Dan Sweeney (Middletown/Middletown South) doubled to put runners at second and third, setting up Poinsett, who knocked a two-run single for the 3-1 Osprey lead.

Cairn quickly tied the game 3-3 with two markers in their half of the fourth inning and exploded to break the game open three frames later. Five runs on five hits against three Stockton hurlers in the top of the seventh inning gave the visitors a commanding 8-3 lead.

One more tally in the eighth and two more in the ninth put Cairn up by 11-3 before Stockton tried to stage a late rally. Freshman Jake Voss (Brick/Brick Memorial) picked up his first college hit to start the bottom of the ninth. Zach Gustites (Flemington/Hunterdon Central) reached on a fielder's choice that erased Voss and advanced to second on a wild pitch.

Stephen Edelstein (Staten Island, NY/Tottenville) drove Gustites in with an RBI single to make it 11-4. Nick LaPorta (Pompton Plains/Pequannock) reached second on a throwing error while Edelstein moved to third. Both runners scored on a fielding error by Cairn to cut the margin to 11-6, but the rally ended shortly after as the Ospreys suffered their third straight defeat to open the season.

Aidan Ryan (Cedar Run/Msgr. Donovan) started on the hill for Stockton and allowed one run while fanning four in three innings but had a no-decision in the game.

Caleb Lang and Aaron Takacs rapped three hits each as Cairn slugged 16 hits on the day. Lang drove in three runs, while Takacs and Joey Nieves-Markee plated two RBI each.

Stockton will host Albright in a doubleheader on Saturday at noon.
