BoxscoreWinter Haven, FL – Stockton University (1-5) exploded for 17 runs on 19 hits and collected its first win of the season with a 17-5 victory over Rensselaer (1-7).
Nick LaPorta (Pompton Plains/Pequannock) went 4-5 including his first career home run and added three runs and an RBI.
Dan Sweeney (Middletown/Middletown South) went 4-6 with three RBI and two runs.
Stephen Struble (Hammonton/Hammonton) slugged a grand slam and
Matt Mangarella (Milltown/Spotswood) contributed three hits and two runs.
A two-run single by
Bryce DiPaola (Easthampton/Rancocas Valley) highlighted a six-run first inning that gave the Ospreys a commanding lead that they never relinquished. LaPorta doubled and scored on an RBI single by
Zach Gustites (Flemington/Hunterdon Central) in third frame for a 7-2 advantage. LaPorta led off the sixth frame with a solo homer to make it 8-2.
The Ospreys broke the game open with seven runs on six hits and an error in the top of the eighth. Sweeny stroked a two-run single and Struble capped the big inning with a grand slam. Stockton added two runs in the top of the ninth to clinch the 17-5 victory.
Starting pitcher
Dylan Warburton (Sewell/Washington Twp.) scattered seven hits and struck out five while allowing four runs (one unearned) in 7.1 innings of work for the win.
Stockton will be back in action tomorrow with a game against Dickinson College in Winter Haven at 3:30 p.m.
