Game 1 /
Game 2Clermont, FL – Stockton University (0-2) played their first two games of the 2016 season in Florida, but got off to a rough start as the Ospreys dropped a doubleheader to Rensselear Polytechnic Institute (RPI) (3-1) by scores of 2-0 and 6-5 in 10 innings on Sunday afternoon. Senior
Dominique Dorris (Mantua/Clearview) picked up her 100th career hit with a single in game two.
Game one was a pitcher's duel as
Samantha Shockey (Deptford/Deptford) got the ball to start the season in the circle. Shockey pitched in and out of trouble but didn't allow a run until the top of the seventh. The Ospreys' only hit in the game came as Shockey lined a single down the left field line in the fourth inning.
Stockton had an opportunity to plate some runs
in the fifth inning as
Danielle Lugo (Vineland/Vineland) reached on an error and walks to
Gianna Cuffari (Cedar Grove/Cedar Grove) and
Holly Arentowicz (Roxbury/Roxbury) loaded the bases, but the Ospreys came away empty.
RPI loaded the bases
with two outs in their half of the seventh inning.
Chelsea Thomas (Barrington/Haddon Heights) just missed making a great diving catch but the ball came out of her glove as she hit the ground. Two runs scored before the Ospreys were able to nab an advancing runner to end the inning. Stockton could not muster the tying runs in their half of the frame and dropped a 2-0 decision.
Game two was a different story as the Ospreys exploded for 13 hits in the contest, led by Cuffari and Lugo with three apiece. Thomas got things rolling in the third inning with a bunt single. She showed her speed by getting to third base sacrifice bunt. Thomas scored one hitter later on an RPI error for a 1-0 lead.
Stockton plated two more tallies in the fifth as Cuffari, singled, stole second, reached third on a fly then scored on a Shockey hit. Dorris picked up her milestone knock with two outs before Lugo plated Shockey with a RBI hit for the 3-0 advantage.
Stockton scored their fourth run in the sixth as Thomas again bunted her way on and reached third on a sacrifice by Cuffari and a throwing error. Freshman
Casey Schieda (Monroe Twp./Monroe Twp.) picked up her first career RBI with a sacrifice fly for the 4-0 margin behind freshman pitcher
Victoria Torp (West Milford/West Milford). Torp tossed the first five frames without allowing a run, walking one and striking out two hitters in her collegiate debut.
RPI fashioned a comeback in the bottom of the sixth against
Hannah Bibeault (Hopatcong/Hopatcong) in relief of Torp. Three consecutive singles, a wild pitch and two ground outs cut the Osprey lead to 4-3 after six innings. RPI then knotted the game against Shockey in the bottom of the seventh on a walk, sacrifice and single followed by a failed pickoff to third that allowed the tying run to score and sent the contest to extra frames.
Both teams plated runs in the ninth inning but Stockton was held to just the lone score when Lugo was robbed of a hit with two outs and two runners on. RPI then took the game in the 10th inning on a fielder's choice edge the Ospreys 6-5.
Stockton will be back in action tomorrow facing Macalester College at 3 p.m. then Transylvania University at 5 p.m.
