Transylvania Box ScoreClermont, FL – Stockton University (2-2) rebounded in a big way on day two of their spring trip to Florida by picking their first two victories of the season. The Ospreys blasted Macalester 12-1 in six innings before rallying for a thrilling 4-3 win over Transylvania in the second game of the day.
Danielle Lugo (Vineland/Vineland) smashed her first two career home runs to lead the attack.
Stockton came out firing against Macalester, scoring two runs apiece in the first and second innings for a quick 4-0 lead. Macalester gained one tally back with a single run in the fourth to cut the margin to 4-1 before Stockton put the game away with two more markers in the fifth frame and six more in the sixth to end the game on the mercy-rule, 12-1. Mavreen Hering her first victory at the helm of the Stockton program.
Alexa Massa (Moorestown/Moorestown) had three hits, scored three times and knocked in three runs. Lugo,
Victoria Conklin (Randolph/Randolph) and
Catherine Wunder (Clinton/North Hunterdon) each had two RBI in the assault.
Samantha Shockey (Deptford/Deptford) tossed the first five frames allowing one run, one walk, striking out three and inducing nine ground ball outs.
Allyson Kuhn (Leesburg, VA/Tuscarora) finished up the final inning in the circle.
Against Transylvania, Stockton scored first on Lugo's second homer of the day to give the Ospreys a 1-0 lead in the second inning. Kuhn came on in relief of
Hannah Bibeault (Hopatcong/Hopatcong),who tossed three scoreless innings to start, but the Pioneers greeted her rudely in fourth frame. A solo homer, double and walk, sandwiched by a sacrifice bunt and a throwing error by Kuhn, plated three runs to give the Pioneers a 3-1 lead.
The Ospreys began their winning rally in the fifth inning as
Nicole Tomo (Cedar Grove/Cedar Grove) reached base on a throwing error and advanced to second.
Chelsea Thomas (Barrington/Haddon Heights) bunted for a hit and the ensuing failed rundown of Thomas allowed Tomo to score to cut the lead to 3-2. In the sixth, Lugo was hit by a pitch and
Dominique Dorris (Mantua/Clearview) bunted for a hit, with Lugo advancing to third on the play and Dorris reaching second. Another error allowed Lugo to score and the game was tied 3-3.
Stockton then finished the game in the bottom of teh seventh. Freshman
Casey Schieda (Monroe Twp./Monroe Twp) walked to start the inning. One batter later, Shockey smashed a single to right field but the ball eluded the outfielder for an error, allowing Schieda to race all the way around from first for the winning tally in the 4-3 triumph.
Freshman pitcher
Victoria Torp (West Milford/West Milford) earned her first career win with three innings of solid relief. Torp did not allow a run, scattered four hits, did not walk a batter and struck out one.
Stockton will play again tomorrow against Bethel University at 9 a.m. and Norwich University at 11 a.m.
