Bethel Boxscore /
Norwich BoxscoreClermont, FL – Stockton University (4-2) used some quality pitching and solid defense as the Ospreys swept both games on day three of their Florida spring trip. Stockton came from behind to defeat Bethel (3-6) 4-3 before holding on for a 3-2 win over Norwich (0-3)
in the nightcap. Hannah Bibeault (Hopatcong/Hopatcong) tossed her second career complete game against Norwich.
Â
Stockton fell behind quickly in the first game as Bethel struck for two early runs against starting pitcher
Samantha Shockey (Deptford/Deptford). Three singles and two walks enabled Bethel to forge a 2-0 advantage in the first inning.
That score remained until Stockton got the offense going in the fourth inning after a great diving stop by
Gianna Cuffari (Cedar Grove/Cedar Grove) to end the third inning seemed to spur the Ospreys. Shockey led off the fourth with a single and pinch-runner
Savannah Riotte (Elizabeth/Elizabeth) eventually scored on a
Victoria Conklin (Randolph/Randolph) base hit to cut the lead to 2-1.
Â
Nicole Tomo (Cedar Grove/Cedar Grove) doubled to start the fifth frame, advanced to third on a sacrifice and then scored on a sacrifice fly by Cuffari to knot the game at 2-2. The Ospreys took the lead in the seventh inning after Cuffari was hit by pitch and advanced to third when a
Danielle Lugo (Vineland/Vineland) bunt was mishandled, putting runners at second and third. Shockey knocked in Cuffari with a groundout, then an error one batter latter allowed Lugo to score to make it 4-2.
Â
The Royals threatened in their half with a walk and single. A wild pitch by
Victoria Torp (West Milford/West Milford) moved the runners to second and third with two out.
Casey Schieda (Monroe Twp./Monroe Twp) then saved the game with a diving stop in the hole at shortstop, picking off the runner at second to end the game. Torp earned her second win in as many days with five innings of superb relief. The freshman allowed five hits, one run and one walk. Shockey rapped two hits in the contest.
Â
Stockton jumped out to a 3-0 first inning lead against Norwich and held on for the victory. Three hit batters and RBI by Conklin, Tomo and
Dominique Dorris (Mantua/Clearview) accounted for the runs. Bibeault made it stand up, not allowing a hit until there were two outs in the sixth inning.
The Cadets made it interesting in the top of the seventh, finally getting to the sophomore hurler. Two singles, a sacrifice, an RBI groundout and another RBI on an infield hit made it 3-2 with two outs. Bibeault squashed the threat, ending the game with a strikeout for the 3-2 win. Dorris backed her up with two hits in the game.
                                                                Â
Stockton will have a day off tomorrow before resuming play on Thursday. The Ospreys will face Bates College at 1 p.m. and then take on Wisconsin-Stevens Point immediately following.
