Stockton Edged by Calvin in 10 Innings

Winter Haven, FL – Stockton University (1-7) smacked 15 hits but was outlasted 10-8 by Calvin (MI) (3-4) in 10 innings. Matt Mangarella (Milltown/Spotswood) and Dan Sweeney (Middletown/Middletown South) led the Ospreys with three hits apiece.
 
Mangarella contributed a double, triple and three RBI while Sweeney chipped in with two runs and two RBI. Nick LaPorta (Pompton Plains/Pequannock), Tyler Hobbs (Brick/Brick Memorial), Bryce DiPaola (Eastampton/Rancocas Valley) and Antonio Morello (Washington Twp./Washington Twp.) stroked two hits apiece.
 
Stockton took an early 2-0 lead on an RBI double by Mangarella in the first inning and RBI single by Sweeney in the second. The Ospreys then scored five runs in the third frame for a 7-0 advantage. DiPaola, Morello and Sweeney all rapped RBI singles before Mangarella capped the outburst with a two-run triple.
 
Calvin got on the board in the top of the sixth to make it 7-3 but Stockton came right back with a run in the bottom half as DiPaola singled and later scored on an error for an 8-3 lead. The Knights closed the gap to 8-7 with four runs in the eighth frame and tied the game 8-8 with one tally in the top of the ninth.
 
Calvin took its first lead of the game with two runs in the top of the 10th. In their last chance, the Ospreys got the tying run to the plate following a one-out walk to LaPorta but the next two batters were retired and Stockton absorbed the 10-8 setback.
 
Stockton pitcher Kevin Buell (Ocean Twp./Ocean Twp.) tossed the first six innings and struck out six while allowing three runs on six hits, but he was not involved in the decision.
