Game 2Auburndale, FL – Stockton University (1-9) received solid pitching but struggled to score in a doubleheader against Westfield State (MA) (4-4). The Ospreys managed just two runs on the day, suffering 3-1 and 4-1 defeats.
Vaughn Champion (Galloway/Absegami) went 5-6 at the plate to account for nearly half of Stockton's 14 hits in the twinbill.
Champion was 3-3 with the lone RBI in the opener.
Brandon Perna (Cherry Hill/CH West) pitched a complete game, allowing three runs on eight hits with three strikeouts, but he absorbed the loss.
Westfield State scored one run in the first inning and two more in the second but Perna shut the Owls down the rest of the way to give his team a chance.
Bryce DiPaola (Eastampton/Rancocas Valley) led off the fifth inning by reaching base on an error. He later scored on a two-out RBI single by Champion to make it 3-1. The Ospreys managed one hit apiece in the last two innings but did not score.
In the nightcap, Champion went 2-3 and
Stephen Struble (Hammonton/Hammonton) was 1-3 with a double.
Mike Bergin (Middletown/Middletown South) allowed four runs and fanned seven in six innings but was saddled with the loss.
Stockton took an early 1-0 lead on an RBI single by
Nick LaPorta (Pompton Plains/Pequannock) in the bottom of the first. The advantage lasted until the third inning when Westfield State scored three runs on five hits. The Ospreys stranded one runner apiece in innings three through six. Westfield State added an insurance run in the top of the sixth for the 4-1 final.
Stockton will be back in action tomorrow for a single game against UMass-Dartmouth in Auburndale at 4 p.m.
