Auburndale, FL- Stockton University (1-10) surrendered three runs in the bottom of the eighth that turned a one-run lead into a 5-3 defeat to UMass Dartmouth (3-4). Dan Sweeney (Middletown/Middletown South) went 3-4 with two stolen bases and a run scored.

Tyler Hobbs (Brick/Brick Memorial) was 2-3 with a double as Sweeney and Hobbs accounted for five of Stockton's nine hits. Aidan Ryan (Cedar Run/Msgr. Donovan) limited UMass Dartmouth to just five hits and one earned run in 7.2 innings pitched but four errors led to four unearned runs that proved to be Stockton's undoing. The Ospreys also left 11 runners on base.

Stockton took a 1-0 lead in the third inning as Sweeney led off with a single and later scored an unearned run. UMass Dartmouth pulled ahead 2-1 with two runs in the bottom of the fifth but the Ospreys answered with the tying run in the top of the sixth. Stephen Struble (Hammonton/Hammonton) ripped a triple and then scored on a passed ball for a 2-2 deadlock.

Stockton went on top 3-2 in the seventh on an infield RBI single by Matt Mangarella (Milltown/Spotswood) that scored Vaughn Champion (Galloway/Absegami) who had reached on an error and stolen second. With two outs in the bottom of the eighth, a Stockton error extended the inning. UMass Dartmouth capitalized with three runs to overtake the Ospreys 5-3.

Stockton was retired in order in the top of the ninth and suffered its fifth setback of the season by two runs or less.

The Ospreys will conclude their 10-game stint in Florida with a doubleheader against Farmingdale State tomorrow at 9:30 a.m.
