Stockton Splits Last Two Games in Florida

Keene State Boxscore / Elmhurst Boxscore

Clermont, FL – Stockton University (7-3) split their last two contests on the spring trip as the Ospreys extended their winning streak to seven straight with a 3-0 win over Keene State (5-8) before succumbing to a late rally and dropping the final game 11-9 to Elmhurst (1-0). Samantha Shockey (Deptford/Deptford) led the way with five hits and two RBI on the day while tossing a three-hit shutout in the opener.

Game one was all Shockey as she got all the runs she would need in the third inning when Stockton plated two markers. Chelsea Thomas (Barrington/Haddon Heights) singled and stole second. Danielle Lugo (Vineland/Vineland) moved Thomas to third with a single and then Shockey drove her in with an RBI single for a 1-0 lead. Catherine Wunder (Clinton/North Hunterdon) drove in Lugo with a hit and it was 2-0.

Stockton tacked on an insurance run in the sixth frame as Alexa Massa (Moorestown/Moorestown) singled and advanced to second on a wild pitch. With two outs, pinch hitter Holly Arentowicz (Roxbury/Roxbury) blasted a double to right-center to score Massa for the 3-0 margin. Shockey did the rest as she allowed just three hits and two walks while striking out two hitters. Shockey induced 13 groundouts in posting her fourth career whitewash.

Game two saw Stockton give up an eight-run lead and their winning streak to the Blue Jays. The Ospreys sent 12 hitters to the plate in the eight-run uprising in the third inning. Stockton rapped seven hits and had three hit batsmen, with the big blows coming on a Gianna Cuffari (Cedar Grove/Cedar Grove) two-run single and an RBI single by Massa.

Everything unraveled for Stockton in the top of the fifth inning. The Blue Jays scored seven runs (three unearned) on three hits and three walks and an error. Allyson Kuhn (Leesburg, VA/Tuscarora) came on in relief and got out of the inning, but the game was now 8-7 in favor of the Ospreys. Stockton added a run in the sixth on another Shockey hit that drove in Cuffari for the 9-7 advantage.

Elmhurst scored four times on five hits and an error in the top of the seventh to pull ahead 11-9. Stockton got the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the ninth but a double play on a lineout snuffed any chance of a rally and result was an 11-9 setback. The Ospreys finished the week with a 7-3 record, outscoring the opponents 61-37 in the 10 games.

Stockton will return to New Jersey over the weekend and play a road doubleheader at Alvernia on Tuesday at 3 p.m.
