BoxscoreGalloway, NJ – Stockton University (2-11) played their first home game in three weeks and was shut out 2-0 by Immaculata (11-7), which extended its win streak to seven. Stockton outhit the Mighty Macs 8-6, led by
Matt Mangarella (Milltown/Spotswood) with three singles.
All three Osprey hurlers pitched well despite the outcome. Starter
Mike Bergin (Middletown/Middletown South) allowed just one run on six hits and struck out two in five innings.
Brandon Perna (Cherry Hill/CH West) retired the first seven batters that he faced before he was touched for an unearned run.
Kevin Buell (Ocean Twp./Ocean Twp.) tossed a scoreless ninth inning.
Vaughn Champion (Galloway/Absegami) reached base twice, finishing 1-3 with a walk. Stockton left eight runners on base, including two in the first inning during which Mangarella and
Nick LaPorta (Pompton Plains/Pequannock) singled and Champion walked.
The game was scoreless into the fifth frame before Immaculata broke through for the first run. Two singles by the Mighty Macs set the stage for a squeeze bunt by Pat Devenney that scored Howie Kalamets.
With one out in the bottom of the fifth, Mangarella singled, stole second and advanced to third on a single by
Zach Gustites (Flemington/Hunterdon Central), but the rally stalled there. Immaculata later plated an unearned run in the top of the eighth for a 2-0 count.
Mangarella led off the bottom of the eighth with a single. The Ospreys had runners on first and second after a one-out single by Champion however the next two batters were retired to end the inning. Stockton was set down in order in the bottom of the ninth and suffered the 2-0 setback.
Stockton will play a doubleheader at Penn State Abington on Saturday at noon in games that were rescheduled from February 28.
