Game 2Jenkintown, PA – Stockton University (3-12) split a makeup doubleheader at Penn State Abington (7-12), dropping the first game 1-0 before winning the nightcap 8-2. The games were originally scheduled for February 28 but were postponed due to inclement weather.
Pitcher
Dylan Warburton (Sewell/Washington Twp.) tossed a three-hitter with six strikeouts in the opener but was outdueled by Penn State Abington's Matt McDonough who blanked the Ospreys on just two hits.
Stephen Struble (Hammonton/Hammonton) and
Zach Gustites (Flemington/Hunterdon Central) singled for Stockton's only two safeties of the game.
The Nittany Lions manufactured the game's only run on a leadoff double, sacrifice bunt and a groundout in the second inning. Stockton's best scoring chance came in the fifth frame. Struble led off with a single then moved to second on a sacrifice and third on a wild pitch before he was stranded.
After two consecutive shutouts, Stockton broke out with eight runs on nine hits in the nightcap.
Nick LaPorta (Pompton Plains/Pequannock) went 2-4 with a home run, two RBI and two runs.
Bryan Bessinger (Burlington Twp./Burlington Twp.) went 2-3 with a double and two RBI while
Matt Mangarella (Milltown/Spotswood) was 2-3 with two stolen bases and two runs.
Stockton starter
Aidan Ryan (Cedar Run/Msgr. Donovan) earned his first win of the season, allowing two runs, one unearned, on seven hits with three strikeouts in five innings pitched.
Ryan Adamski (Deptford/Deptford) tossed two scoreless innings to close out the 8-2 win.
Stockton opened the scoring with two runs in the second inning. LaPorta led off with a single followed by RBI doubles from Struble and Bessinger for a 2-0 lead. LaPorta blasted his second homer of the year in the third frame, a two-run shot that made it 4-0 but Penn State Abington halved the margin to 4-2 with single runs in the third and fourth innings.
The Ospreys plated one run in the sixth inning on an RBI single by Bessinger and broke the game open with three unearned runs on three hits and two errors in the seventh stanza.
Vaughn Champion (Galloway/Absegami) singled in two runs and scored the third on an error to cap the 8-2 Stockton victory.
Stockton will have a week off before starting NJAC play with a doubleheader at Montclair State next Saturday, April 2 at 11:30 a.m.
