Stockton Downed Twice by Montclair State

Game 1 / Game 2

Montclair, NJ – Stockton University (3-14, 0-2 NJAC) began NJAC play with a pair of setbacks by scores of 5-4 and 9-1 in a doubleheader at Montclair State (11-9, 2-0).

Game one saw Stockton allow five runs on six hits in the first inning before Mike Bergin (Middletown/Middletown South) settled in and shut down the Red Hawks the rest of the way. The Ospreys made it close with a four-spot during their half of the fourth inning.

Tyler Hobbs (Brick/Brick Memorial) plated the first run with a sacrifice fly and Matt Poinsett (Ocean Gate/Msgr. Donovan) ripped an RBI double. Antonio Morello (Washington Twp./Washington Twp.) followed with a two-run triple, his first career extra-base hit, to make it a 5-4 game.

Poinsett walked and advanced to second on a wild pitch with two outs in the ninth but was stranded there as Stockton could not bring home the tying run. Bergin scattered six safeties over the final seven innings of work, earning his second career complete game but suffering the loss. Matt Mangarella (Milltown/Spotswood) rapped two of the Ospreys' seven hits to lead the squad.

The Ospreys whacked 12 hits in the nightcap but converted them into just one run. Freshman Jake Voss (Brick/Brick Memorial) led the way with three safeties including two doubles and Dan Sweeney (Middletown/Middletown South) also had three hits.

Stockton fell behind 3-0 in the first inning and trailed 7-0 before getting on the board in the sixth frame. Vaughn Champion (Galloway/Absegami) led off with a single and advanced to second on an error. Nick LaPorta (Pompton Plains/Pequannock) moved Champion to third with a single and he scored on a 6-4-3 double play. The Red Hawks tacked on two runs in the seventh inning for the 9-1 final.

Stockton will take back in action on Thursday, April 7 when the host The College of New Jersey in an NJAC game at 3:30 p.m.
