Game 2Galloway, NJ – Stockton University (10-4) played their home opener and swept a doubleheader from St. Joseph's-Long Island (8-6) by scores of 5-3 and 9-3.
Nicole Tomo (Cedar Grove/Cedar Grove) knocked two hits in each game to bring her career total to 98 and also drove in the go-ahead run in both contests, snapping a 3-3 tie each time.
Samantha Shockey (Deptford/Deptford) tossed a four-hitter with eight strikeouts and only one of the three runs against her was earned in the opener. Shockey also went 2-4 with a run and two RBI.
Alexa Massa (Moorestown/Moorestown) was 2-4 with two RBI while Tomo and
Dominique Dorris (Mantua/Clearview) contributed two hits apiece.
St. Joseph's-LI scored a run in the top of the first and Stockton answered with three in the bottom half for a 3-1 lead. Shockey stroked an RBI single and Massa later added a two-run single to put the Ospreys on top. The Golden Eagles came right back with two unearned runs in the top of the second to tie the game 3-3.
The deadlock lasted until the bottom of the fifth when Tomo singled to deliver pinch-runner
Samantha Liepe (Mays Landing/Oakcrest) with the go-ahead run at 4-3. Stockton tacked on an insurance run in the sixth frame on an RBI single by Shockey and prevailed 5-3.
The Ospreys stroked 13 hits in the nightcap, led by Tomo who went 2-3 with a double, two runs and two RBI.
Danielle Lugo (Vineland/Vineland) was 2-4 with two runs and two RBI.
Casey Schieda (Monroe Twp./Monroe Twp.) chipped in with two hits, including a double, a run and an RBI while
Chelsea Thomas (Barrington/Haddon Hts.) also registered two hits.
St. Joseph's again got on the board first, this time with a run in the top of the third. Stockton responded with three runs in the bottom half for a 3-1 advantage. Lugo singled home the first two runs and Dorris smacked an RBI double. Two errors by the Ospreys in the top of the fourth resulted in two unearned runs that tied the game 3-3.
Stockton then took the lead for good with three runs on four hits in the bottom of the fourth. Freshman
Alexis Dunphy (Hainesport/Rancocas Valley) led off with her first career hit and fellow rookie Schieda followed with a double, setting the stage for a two-run double by Tomo that made it 5-3.
Catherine Wunder (Clinton/North Hunterdon) lofted a sacrifice fly to score Tomo for a 6-3 advantage.
In the fifth inning, Massa singled, stole second and scored on an RBI single by Schieda to increase the lead to 7-3. Shockey rapped an RBI single and Dorris earned an RBI with a squeeze bunt in the sixth frame for the final runs in the 9-3 triumph.
Freshman
Victoria Torp (West Milford/West Milford) earned the win in relief of Shockey, allowing two runs, both unearned, on three hits in four innings pitched. Megan Leun and Gabrielle Cinquemani tallied two hits apiece for St. Joseph's.
Stockton will have Easter weekend off and then travel to Drew University for a doubleheader on Tuesday, March 29 at 3 p.m.
