Stockton Sweeps Third Straight Doubleheader

Game 1 / Game 2

Galloway, NJ – Stockton University (14-4) posted its third consecutive doubleheader sweep, topping FDU-Florham (6-8) 1-0 in eight innings and 11-3 in five innings to boost its winning streak to six. Freshman Alexis Dunphy (Hainesport/Rancocas Valley) smacked a walk-off single in the first game and the Ospreys rapped 12 hits in the second game.

The opener, played in extremely windy conditions, was a pitcher's duel in which Samantha Shockey (Deptford/Deptford) tossed a three-hit shutout with four strikeouts to best FDU-Florham's Sydney Worek who hurled a four-hitter with four whiffs. Shockey knocked two of Stockton's four safeties while Nikki Caruso slapped two of FDU's three hits.

Neither team got a hit in the first three innings. The first two FDU batters reached base in the fourth but Shockey worked out of the inning unscathed. Stockton's best scoring chance in regulation came in the bottom of the seventh. Shockey led off with a single, moved to second on a sacrifice and third on a single by Dominique Dorris (Mantua/Clearview) with one out, but the Ospreys could not convert.

The tiebreaker, in which a runner is placed on second base to start each half-inning, went into effect in the eighth frame and Shockey retired three straight batters to keep the game scoreless.

In the bottom half, Casey Schieda (Monroe Twp./Monroe Twp.) started on second and moved to third on a flyout by Nicole Tomo (Cedar Grove/Cedar Grove). Dunphy then pinch-hit and ripped a single off the first baseman's glove to score Schieda with the winning run in the 1-0 victory.

The wind calmed down and the Stockton bats heated up in the second game, led by Tomo who went 2-3 with a double, two runs and two RBI. Alexa Massa (Moorestown/Moorestown) was 2-4 with a double and three RBI. Shockey extended her hitting streak to 11 games by going 2-4 with a double, run and an RBI.

The Ospreys raced to the lead with five runs on six hits in the second inning. Tomo doubled in the first two runs and Chelsea Thomas (Barrington/Haddon Hts.) followed with an RBI single to score Tomo, who had stolen third. Danielle Lugo (Vineland/Vineland) capped the big inning with a two-run double for a 5-0 advantage.

FDU-Florham scored its first runs of the day with two tallies in the top of the third to make it 5-2. In the fourth frame, an RBI single by Shockey and RBI double by Massa brought the margin back to five at 7-2. The Devils got one back in the top of the fifth but Stockton ended the game with four runs in the bottom half.

Schieda and Tomo both singled early in the inning and Dunphy earned her second RBI of the day on a fielder's choice. Gianna Cuffari (Cedar Grove/Cedar Grove) followed with another fielder's choice to plate Tomo. Massa later stroked a two-run single to give Stockton the 11-3 win as the run rule was enacted.

Victoria Torp (West Milford/West Milford) earned the win with three innings pitched in relief of Shockey, who started. Torp allowed three runs on five hits. For FDU-Florham, Caruso went 2-3 with a triple and two runs while Taylor Torre was 2-3 with an RBI and a run.

Stockton will open New Jersey Athletic Conference play on Saturday with a doubleheader at defending NJAC champion Ramapo at 1 p.m.
