Game 2Mahwah, NJ – Stockton University (14-6, 0-2 NJAC) had the difficult task of opening up NJAC play by on the road at defending conference champion Ramapo (11-5, 2-0). The Ospreys dropped a pair of two-run games to the Roadrunners, 2-0 and 7-5. The defeat in the opener snapped a six-game winning streak for Stockton.
The first game was a tightly contested affair with neither team able to mount much offense. Stockton got runners to second and third in both the second and seventh innings but came away empty and was blanked for the first time since the season opener. The Roadrunners scored the only runs of the game in their half of the fifth inning on a sacrifice fly and a wild pitch for the 2-0 final.
Samantha Shockey (Deptford/Deptford) tossed her sixth complete game, scattering five hits and allowing two earned runs while striking out three.
Holly Arentowicz (Roxbury/Roxbury) rapped two of the Ospreys' six hits to lead the team.
In the nightcap, Stockton got on the board in the top of the first, manufacturing two runs on one hit. Arentowicz earned an RBI on a fielder's choice and
Dominique Dorris (Mantua/Clearview) followed with an RBI groundout for a 2-0 lead that proved short-lived as Ramapo's Nicole Mahoney slugged a grand slam in the bottom half to double the Ospreys 4-2.
Stockton faced a 6-2 deficit entering the sixth inning but cut it to one with three runs on three hits. Shockey singled and Arentowicz followed with a double before Dorris singled in Shockey with the first run. Two batters later,
Alexis Dunphy (Hainesport/Rancocas Valley) reached on a fielder's choice while Arentowicz and Dorris both scored on the play to make it 6-5.
Mahoney slammed a solo homer in the bottom of the sixth and the Ospreys could not mount another rally in their last chance, falling 7-5. Shockey finished 2-3 with two runs to extend her hitting streak to 13 games. Dorris was 1-3 with two RBI and a run while Arentowicz contributed a double, run and an RBI.
Hannah Bibeault (Hopatcong/Hopatcong) pitched four solid relief innings, allowing two runs on two hits to keep the Ospreys close, but she did not factor in the decision.
Stockton will return home to face Rutgers-Camden in an NJAC doubleheader on Tuesday at 3 p.m.
