BoxscoreGalloway, NJ – Stockton University (3-1) got back on the winning track with some staunch defense and balanced scoring, leading to a 17-7 victory over Centenary College (2-2) in the home opener. Ten different Ospreys scored goals on the night, led by freshman
Tommy Gallo (Clinton/North Hunterdon) with four goals and two assists.
Stockton jumped out to a 7-1 first quarter lead starting with a quick tally by
Mike Caposella (Wayne/DePaul Catholic) just 49 seconds into the game. After a Cyclone marker tied the contest at 1-1, the Ospreys exploded for six straight tallies.
Two scores each by Gallo and
Mark Scherzer (Holmdel/Holmdel) and one each by
Vincent Manasia (Clark/Arthur L. Johnson) and
Guy Loggi (Somers Point/Mainland) gave Stockton the 7-1 margin.
The home team continued the onslaught with markers by Loggi and
Zack Aho (Shamong/Seneca) early in the second stanza for a 9-1 lead.
Shane Moyer (North Wales, PA/Archbishop Wood) and
James O'Donnell (Mt. Laurel/Lenape) offset two goals by the visitors for 11-3 advantage at the half.
The Osprey defense stepped up in the third period, keeping the Cyclones off the board while Gallo and Aho scored goals for Stockton. Gallo assisted on Aho's tally and the Ospreys led 13-3 after three periods.
The teams scored four goals apiece in the fourth quarter as Stockton cruised to the 17-7 win. Caposella, Gallo,
Mike Drumm (Fairfield /West Essex) and
Santino Gabriele (Nutley/Nutley) hit the net in the final period for the Ospreys.
Caposella, Loggi and Aho finished with two goals apiece.
Tyler Bollard (Philadelphia, PA/Archbishop Ryan) had an outstanding night, winning 22 of 26 faceoffs (.846) and scooping a game-high 16 ground balls.
Max Beck (Marlton/Cherokee) topped the defense with three caused turnovers while and
Lance Pecina (Clark/Arthur L. Johnson) scooped six ground balls.
Pat Quinn (Shrewsbury/Red Bank Regional) played the first three quarters in net for Stockton, making six saves and earning the win.
Eric Leonard (Mt. Laurel/Lenape) played 9:47 of the fourth period, making one save before being replaced by freshman
Andrew Baumgartel (Egg Harbor Twp./EHT) who made his college debut with three saves in the final 5:13.
Nolan Gottshall scored three goals to lead the Cyclones, with Joey DiBiasse netting two scores. Kevin Switzer started in net for Centenary and kicked out 17 shots before giving way to Riley Hill for the final 5:13.
Stockton will play home again on Saturday when the Ospreys host Albright at 3 p.m.
