Boxscore

Galloway, NJ – Stockton University (3-16, 0-4 NJAC) came up on the short end of a pitcher's duel and dropped a close 3-0 contest to The College of New Jersey (19-4, 4-2 NJAC) on Monday afternoon. The game was a makeup from last Thursday due to inclement weather and was played in a crisp 1:56.  Mike Bergin (Middletown/Middletown South) tossed eight innings, scattering seven hits and allowing just one earned run plus two unearned for the Ospreys.

Bergin and his counterpart Michael Fischer were on their game throughout the first five frames as neither team was able to get much traction against the two hurlers. Stockton mounted some offense in their half of the fourth inning. Vaughn Champion (Galloway/Absegami) and Matt Mangarella (Milltown/Spotswood) reached on base hits with one out but a double play ended the threat.

TCNJ broke the scoreless tie in the top of the sixth, starting with a single by John Rizzi. A sacrifice bunt and groundout advanced Rizzi to third base where Garen Turner plated him with an RBI single for a 1-0 lead. The Lions added two more insurance runs in their half of the eighth on two hits, a fielder's choice and an error to stretch the margin to 3-0. Fischer did the rest, holding the Ospreys off the board to register the victory at 3-0.

Bergin threw eight innings, allowing just the seven hits while striking out two, and did not walk a batter. Ryan Adamski (Deptford/Deptford) finished up with a scoreless ninth inning for Stockton. Five different Ospreys stroked singles on the afternoon. Bryan Bessinger (Burlington Twp./Burlington Twp.) extended his on-base streak to five consecutive games with a hit.

Fischer tossed his third complete game and fanned one, moving his record to 3-0. Patrick Roberts and Zach Shindler rapped two hits each, with Shindler picking up two RBI for the Lions.

Stockton will be back in action on Thursday when they travel to Rutgers-Camden for an NJAC game at 3:30 p.m.
