Game 1 /
Game 2
Galloway, NJ – Stockton University (7-18, 4-6 NJAC) pounded out 23 hits and received solid pitching and timely defense as the Ospreys swept a doubleheader from the #1 team in the D3baseball.com national poll, Ramapo College (23-4-1, 7-3 NJAC), by scores of 7-2 and 4-1.
Matt Poinsett (Ocean Gate/Msgr. Donovan) topped the Ospreys with six hits and scored three times on the day. The two wins on the day extended the Stockton winning streak to four.
Â
Game one saw Stockton score all the runs they would need in the second inning to break the game open. After allowing a marker in the first inning, the Ospreys sent 10 batters to the plate, including six consecutive hits, scoring six runs. The big blow came from
Matt Mangarella (Milltown/Spotswood), who knocked in two runs with a base hit to cap the uprising.
Â
That's all
Aidan Ryan (Cedar Run/Msgr. Donovan) would need as he allowed just one more run in picking up his second win and first complete game of the year. Stockton tacked on one final tally in their half of the seventh on a
Vaughn Champion (Galloway/Absegami) RBI hit. Ryan allowed just three hits and two runs while striking out four batters in the 7-2 victory.
Â
In addition to Poinsett's three hits,
Tyler Hobbs (Brick/Brick Memorial), Mangarella and Champion picked up two hits each in the 12-hit attack.
Â
Freshman
Ray Hughes (Forked River/Lacey Twp.) got the nod on the hill for the nightcap and pitched well. Hughes allowed two hits and one run in his 4.2 innings of work before giving way to
Ryan Adamski (Deptford/Deptford).
The Ospreys plated two runs in the third inning. Poinsett doubled and later scored on a
Dan Sweeney (Middletown/Middletown South) RBI groundout. Mangarella walked, advanced on an infield hit by
Bryan Bessinger (Burlington Twp./Burlington Twp.) and scored on an RBI single by Champion for the 2-0 margin.
The Roadrunners cut the lead to 2-1 with their only tally of the game in the fourth inning before Stockton tacked on single runs in the fifth and sixth frames. Bessinger rapped an RBI singles in the fifth and up an RBI and
Austin Gonella (Beachwood/Toms River South) scored on passed ball in the sixth for the 4-1 advantage.
Â
Adamski closed out the game with 4.1 innings of scoreless, hitless relief. The senior walked one while fanning two in earning his first win of the season. Poinsett had three more knocks, with Bessinger and Gonella rapping two hits each in the 4-1 victory.
Â
Stockton's next game will be on Thursday when they host Rowan University. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
