Stockton Win Streak Snapped with 13-1 Defeat

Boxscore

Galloway, NJ – Stockton University (7-19, 4-7 NJAC) saw their four-game win streak come to a crashing halt as Rowan University (19-13, 7-4 NJAC) routed the Ospreys 13-1 on Thursday afternoon. Tyler Hobbs (Brick/Brick Memorial) led the home team with two of the 10 hits for Stockton on the day.

The Ospreys got off to a rough start as the visitors plated two runs on two hits and an error in the top of the first inning for a quick 2-0 margin. Stockton had an opportunity to cut the advantage in the fourth after a leadoff single by Matt Mangarella (Milltown/Spotswood). He stole second and advanced to third on a groundout but was stranded as Stockton was not able to push across the tally.

Rowan broke the game open in the top of the fifth inning on four hits, two of which were bunts. Two sacrifice flies and an error accounted for four runs for a 6-0 lead. The Ospreys had another chance to cut into the margin in their half of the inning. Singles by Antonio Morello (Cherry Hill/Cherry Hill East) and Hobbs put runners on first and second with one away, but Stockton was turned away again without scoring.

Rowan tacked on a run in the sixth and two more in the seventh inning for a 9-0 lead before Stockton broke through in the eighth. Safeties by Zach Gustites (Flemington/Hunterdon Central), Matt Vincenti (Eatontown/Monmouth Regional) and Bryan Bessinger (Burlington Twp./Burlington Twp.) loaded the bases with one out.

Christian Campbell (Toms River/Toms River South) plated Gustites with Stockton's only run on a sacrifice fly for his first career RBI to get the Ospreys on the board. The Profs scored four more times in the ninth inning to set the final score at 13-1.

Stockton rapped 10 hits on the day, all singles, led by Hobbs' two safeties. Freshman JJ Swentkowski (Egg Harbor Twp./EHT) picked up his first career hit in the seventh inning for Stockton. Mike Bergin (Middletown/Middletown South) took the loss on the hill for the Ospreys.

Rowan, who smashed out 20 hits including 19 singles, was led by Bret Phillips, Evan Hughes and Steven Todd, who had three hits apiece. Greg Myers drove in two runs to top the squad, with Eric Shugars tossing the first six innings for his fifth win of the season.

Stockton will be back in action tomorrow when they travel to Glassboro for a rematch against Rowan at 3:30 p.m.
