Stockton Sweeps TCNJ 8-2 and 2-1

Game 1 / Game 2

Ewing, NJ – Stockton University (24-8, 8-4 NJAC) continued its recent run of success by sweeping an NJAC doubleheader from The College of New Jersey (20-13, 7-5) 8-2 and 2-1. The Ospreys have won 10 of their last 11 games and moved into a three-way tie for second place in the NJAC with Ramapo and William Paterson.

Freshman shortstop Casey Schieda (Monroe Twp./Monroe Twp.) went 2-3 with her first career home run plus a double and two RBI in the opener. Danielle Lugo (Vineland/Vineland) stroked two hits as well. Pitcher Hannah Bibeault (Hopatcong/Hopatcong) remained unbeaten on the season (6-0) by tossing a complete game in which she allowed two runs on eight hits with one strikeout.

Bibeault yielded two runs on two hits and a walk in the bottom of the first then shut down the Lions the rest of the way. The Ospreys got on the board in the second frame when Holly Arentowicz (Roxbury/Roxbury) slugged her first home run of the season to halve the margin to 2-1.

Stockton's one-run deficit lasted until their last chance in the top of the seventh. After a pinch-hit single by Catherine Wunder (Clinton/North Hunterdon), Schieda smashed her a two-run homer that gave the Ospreys the lead at 3-2 and ignited a seven-run outburst.

Lugo, Samantha Shockey (Deptford/Deptford) and Dominique Dorris (Mantua/Clearview) added RBI singles in the big inning and two additional runs scored on a TCNJ error. All told, Stockton sent 11 batters to the plate and scored seven runs on six hits, two walks and an error for the 8-2 triumph.

Shockey starred on the mound and at the plate in the nightcap, tossing a four-hitter and going 2-3 with a double, run and an RBI on offense. Chelsea Thomas (Barrington/Haddon Hts.) chipped in with two hits, a stolen base and a run.

Thomas led off the game with a single and later scored on an RBI double by Shockey. Three batters later, Alexa Massa (Moorestown/Moorestown) singled home Shockey for a 2-0 lead in the top of the first. Shockey allowed just two hits in the first six innings and took a shutout into the bottom of the seventh before TCNJ staged a comeback try.

With one out, a walk and single put the tying run on base. After a flyout, Jess Santelli hit a double to center field that scored the runner from second. Gaby Bennett tried to score the tying run from first but was cut down at the plate by a throw from Tomo to end the game as Stockton held on for the 2-1 victory.

Stockton will be on the road again on Thursday for a non-conference doubleheader at Stevens at 3 p.m.
