Weehawken, NJ – Stockton University (25-9) split a non-conference doubleheader at Stevens (20-14).
Samantha Shockey (Deptford/Deptford) tossed a shutout in the opener for a 3-0 victory. The win was the fourth straight for the Ospreys and they allowed two runs or less in all four. The streak came to an end with a 6-3 setback in the nightcap.
Shockey tossed her fifth shutout of the season, allowing five hits and striking out five. The senior helped her own cause with two of Stockton's five hits and an RBI.
Chelsea Thomas (Barrington/Haddon Hts.) added a hit and scored twice.
Thomas led off the game with a walk, stole second and scored on an error two batters later for a quick 1-0 lead. In the sixth inning, Thomas led off with a single and scored one of two unearned runs in the frame as the Ospreys capitalized on two more errors by Stevens. Shockey registered an RBI with a groundout during the inning.
Shockey retired 13 straight batters from the second through sixth innings. She allowed just one runner to reach second base, in the sixth stanza, before closing out the 3-0 shutout.
Danielle Lugo (Vineland/Vineland) went 3-4 with a double, run and an RBI in the nightcap.
Holly Arentowicz (Roxbury/Roxbury) went 1-3 with a double and an RBI while Thomas contributed a hit, run and an RBI for the Ospreys.
Stockton again started quickly as singles by Lugo and Shockey set the stage for an RBI double by Arentowicz that put the Ospreys ahead 1-0 in the top of the first. In the second frame, Thomas drove in
Nicole Tomo (Cedar Grove/Cedar Grove) with an infield RBI single and then scored on an RBI double by Lugo to increase the lead to 3-0.
After holding Stevens scoreless for 11 straight innings on the day, Stockton stumbled in the fifth stanza as the Ducks exploded for six runs on four hits and two errors. A grand slam by Emily Selitti turned Stockton's 3-2 lead into a 6-3 deficit and the Ospreys never recovered.
Stockton will return home to host Rutgers-Newark in an NJAC doubleheader on Saturday at 1 p.m.
