Game 1 /
Game 2
Galloway, NJ – Stockton University (28-10, 11-5 NJAC) played their last home games of the regular season and split a doubleheader with Kean University (16-20, 7-9 NJAC) on Wednesday afternoon. The Cougars took game one by a 7-2 final before Stockton rebounded with a 2-0 shutout in the nightcap. Freshman
Casey Schieda (Monroe Twp./Monroe Twp.) had three hits on the day, including her second home run of the year.
The Cougars took control in the opener, plating two runs against
Samantha Shockey (Deptford/Deptford) in the top of the third inning for a 2-0 lead. Stockton tried to answer in their half of the frame. Schieda doubled, then advanced to third on a
Nicole Tomo (Cedar Grove/Cedar Grove) double to put runners on second and third with no out, but the rally ended with three quick outs. The next inning, Dana Knapp smacked her eighth home run of the year, a two-run shot, to increase the Kean margin to 4-0 and chase Shockey from the circle.
The Ospreys scored their only runs in the fourth inning as
Holly Arentowicz (Roxbury/Roxbury) doubled and Dominque Dorris (Mantua/Clearview) singled. Dorris got caught in a rundown allowing Arentowicz to score to make it 4-1.
Alexa Massa (Moorestown/Moorestown) and Schieda singled before Tomo rapped her second double to plate Massa to cut the lead to 4-2. The Cougars tacked on runs in the fifth and seventh to set the final score at 7-2.
Game two was all Shockey as she took the ball again for the nightcap. Shockey did not allow a hit until fifth inning and by then Stockton had two runs on the board, one each in the third and fourth frames. Shockey picked up an RBI on a sacrifice fly in the third and Schieda cracked a long homer to dead center in the fourth inning. Kean attempted to rally in the final two innings but stranded three runners on the bases as the Ospreys earned the split 2-0..
Dorris, Tomo and
Chelsea Thomas (Barrington/Haddon Heights) added two hits each to go with Schieda's three safeties. With her shutout win in game two, Shockey is now tied for third in Stockton history in wins and shutouts in a season. With the win, the Ospreys clinched a spot in next week's NJAC playoffs, with the seeding yet to be determined.
Kean was led by Dana Knapp with three hits and three RBI in the first game, with teammate Emily Bissonnette rapping two hits in the opener. Mackenzie Valeriani had the Cougars' only two hits in the second game. Kiele Eichlin earned her seventh win of the year in the opener.
Stockton will finish up the regular season on Saturday when they travel to William Paterson. Game one is scheduled for 1 p.m.
