Stockton Splits Two ECAC Tournament Games

FDU-Florham boxscore / NYU boxscore

Galloway, NJ – Stockton University (32-12) split its two ECAC tournament games today. The Ospreys opened the tourney with a 5-4 comeback win over FDU-Florham (20-16) on a walk-off single by freshman Alexis Dunphy (Hainesport/Rancocas Valley). Stockton later tumbled into the losers bracket with a 5-2 setback to NYU (25-15).

In the other two ECAC tournament games at Stockton, NYU blanked Rutgers-Newark 5-0 and then FDU-Florham eliminated Rutgers-Newark 6-0. The tournament continues tomorrow at 10 a.m.

The Ospreys fell behind FDU-Florham 4-0 as the Devils plated four runs on six hits in the third inning. Stockton got on the board with an RBI single by Alexa Massa (Moorestown/Moorestown) in the bottom of the fourth and made it 4-2 on a solo homer by Holly Arentowicz (Roxbury/Roxbury) in the sixth frame.

Nicole Tomo (Cedar Grove/Cedar Grove) led off the bottom of the seventh with a double and scored on an RBI single by Danielle Lugo (Vineland/Vineland). After a single by Samantha Shockey (Deptford/Deptford), Arentowicz stroked an RBI single to score Lugo with the tying run. Dunphy then pinch-hit and delivered her second walk-off single of the season to plate the winning run in the 5-4 triumph.

Arentowicz went 3-4 with a double and her second home run of the season. Lugo, Shockey and Tomo finished with two hits apiece. Hannah Bibeault (Hopatcong/Hopatcong) earned the win in relief, tossing five scoreless innings and allowing four hits while striking out seven.

In the nightcap, Stockton managed just six hits, one apiece by six different players, and went scoreless until the bottom of the seventh against NYU hurler Diana King. A single run by the Violets in the fourth frame was the only run during the first six innings.

NYU broke the game open with four runs, one unearned, in the top of the seventh for a 5-0 count. In the bottom of the seventh, singles by Shockey, Arentowicz and pinch-hitter Victoria Conklin (Randolph/Randolph) loaded the bases, setting the stage for a two-run single by Tomo that made it 5-2. The hit also brought the tying run to the plate with two outs but the rally stalled there.

Stockton is still alive in the double-elimination tournament. The Ospreys will host FDU-Florham in a loser's bracket game tomorrow at 10 a.m. The winner then will face NYU at noon.
