Stockton Falls in Skyline Championship Game

Boxscore

Montclair, NJ – Stockton University (14-4) faced Montclair State (12-6) in the Skyline Conference championship game for the second straight year and finished as the runner-up for the second time in a row after falling 13-6. Stockton was trying to snap a Montclair State streak that now has reached eight consecutive Skyline titles.

Tommy Gallo (Clinton/North Hunterdon) led the Ospreys with two goals while Colin Shea (Rumson/Rumson-Fair Haven) contributed a goal and an assist. Lance Pecina (Clark/Arthur L. Johnson) chipped in with one goal, a team-high six ground balls and one caused turnover.

Stockton stayed right with Montclair State throughout the first half. The Red Hawks struck first before Mark Scherzer (Holmdel/Holmdel) answered to pull the Ospreys into a 1-1 tie. Montclair State took a 3-1 edge but Pecina got one back and Stockton trailed 3-2 after one quarter.

Gallo scored twice in the first five minutes of the second period to give the Ospreys the lead at 4-3. After Montclair State tied it 4-4, Zack Aho (Shamong/Seneca) put Stockton back on top 5-4 with 5:19 left in the first half. The advantage lasted 3:28 before the Red Hawks potted the tying marker. The Ospreys were one second away from going to the break tied but surrendered a goal with one tick left and trailed 6-5.

In the third quarter, Stockton faced an 8-5 deficit after two tallies 49 seconds apart, but Shea scored to get the Ospreys within 8-6. Stockton would get no closer as Montclair State took control from there and netted the last five goals of the game to deny the upset bid 13-6.

Stockton, which has won a school-record 14 games, is likely to receive a third straight invitation to the ECAC tournament on Monday.
