Stockton Wins Season Opener 2-0

Boxscore

Glenside, PA – Stockton University (1-0) opened the 2016 season with a 2-0 victory over Arcadia University (0-1) to give new head coach Sarah Elleman her first victory at Stockton in her debut as the Ospreys' coach. Elleman was hired in the offseason after seven years as head coach at Utica College (NY). Laura Olbrich (Pittsgrove/A.P. Schalick) scored both goals in the triumph.

Stockton got off to a fast start, attempting the first six shots of the game. Olbrich, the leading scorer for the Ospreys last year with six goals, potted the squad's first tally of the season with 14:18 gone in the game. The senior hit the cage with a deflection and Leah Davies (Ocean City/Ocean City) assisted on the goal.

Just over eight minutes into the second half, Olbrich broke through the Arcadia defense and fired a shot into the far side of the net for an insurance goal that made it 2-0. The Knights registered five shots and three penalty corners the rest of the way but the Stockton defense held strong and preserved the shutout in the season-opening win.

Stockton goalkeeper Emily Sorochynskyj (Boonton/Boonton) earned her third career shutout with five saves. Sorochynskyj made four of her stops in the second half. The Ospreys outshot Arcadia 13-11, with Knights' goalie Brittany Hodson finishing with six saves.

Stockton will be on the road again on Saturday for a game at Eastern University at noon.
