Stockton Wins 1-0 in Double OT

Boxscore

St. Davids, PA – Stockton University junior Alexa Massa (Moorestown/Moorestown) scored in double overtime to lift the Ospreys (2-0) to a 1-0 victory over Eastern University (0-2). Stockton prevailed despite being outshot 29-16 as goalkeeper Emily Sorochynskyj (Boonton/Boonton) made a career-high 19 saves to earn her second straight shutout.

The game was scoreless for over 87 minutes until Stockton's two 2015 NJAC all-conference selections worked together to pot the game-winning goal. Massa received a pass from Sarah Gawrysiak (Haddon Twp./Haddon Twp.) and beat Eastern goalie Nicole Berger with a shot from the top of the arc to give the Ospreys the dramatic triumph.

Caroline Bowman (Ocean City/Ocean City) made two defensive saves and Gawrysiak added one to help Sorochynskyj keep the Eagles off the board. Stockton was outshot 12-4 in the first half but Sorochynskyj made seven saves while Bowman and Gawrysiak added one defensive save apiece. Another defensive save by Bowman early in the second half kept the game scoreless. Massa had a chance on a penalty stroke with 4:54 remaining in regulation but her shot was stopped by Berger.

A defensive save by Eastern prevented Laura Olbrich (Pittsgrove/A.P. Schalick) from winning the game in the first minute of overtime. Sorochynskyj then made seven saves in the first OT to keep the Ospreys in it. Stockton drew a penalty corner in double overtime and Massa fired home the game-winner with 2:37 gone for the 1-0 win.

Stockton will play its home opener against Swarthmore on Thursday, September 8 at 4 p.m.
