Galloway, NJ – Stockton University (7-2, 1-0 NJAC) opened New Jersey Athletic Conference play with a hard-fought 22-25, 26-24, 25-17, 25-19 victory over Montclair State (5-2, 0-1) in a rematch of last year's NJAC championship match.
Lindsay Schuele (Sparta/Sparta) led the Ospreys with a team-high 13 kills.
Freshman
Sarah Walsh (Flemington/Hunterdon Central) established a career high with 11 kills while
Idi Uffen (Williamstown/Williamstown) contributed 10 kills and four blocks. Freshman
Jocelyn Holobetz (Pottsville, PA/Nativity BVM) dished 22 assists and
Jessica Ciandella (Beachwood/Roselle Catholic) tallied 18 assists and 11 digs.
Rebecka Zabilowicz (Belmar/Red Bank Regional) led everyone with 21 digs.
Stockton fell behind 13-7 in the first set, rallied to tie at 20-20 but ultimately fell short 25-22. The second set was close throughout, with 10 ties before the Ospreys scored the last two points to even the match, 26-24. Uffen led Stockton with four kills in the set.
Stockton began to assert itself in the third set, opening up an eight-point lead at 19-11 and rolling to the 25-17 win behind three kills apiece from Schuele and Uffen. The fourth set followed a similar pattern as the Ospreys built a 13-6 lead and stayed in front by at least three the rest of the way to close out the match 25-19. Walsh led the way with four kills in the final stanza.
Hayley Merrill spiked a match-high 21 kills to spark Montclair State. Setter Ashley Griffith tallied 39 assists and 10 digs while Danielle Olcese topped the Red Hawks with 15 digs.
Stockton will compete next in the Stevens Ducks Classic on September 16-17.
