Stockton Wins in Four Sets over Kean

Galloway, NJ – Stockton University (11-3, 2-0 NJAC) remained unbeaten in conference play with a four-set victory 3-1 over Kean University (9-5, 1-2 NJAC) on Thursday night. The scores were 25-20, 26-24, 22-25 and 25-11. Lindsay Schuele (Sparta/Sparta) tied her career-high with 21 kills to lead the Ospreys.
 
Stockton made some early errors to begin the match, falling behind 5-2 before righting the ship on the strength of Stephanie Kovacs (Allentown, PA/Central Catholic) serves that produced five consecutive points. The Ospreys ran off a 13-5 spurt to take a 15-10 advantage. The Cougars closed to 18-17 before Stockton put the first set away 25-20.
 
Set number two was a tight affair as neither team put any more than a two-point margin up on the board. Jenna Lara (Ridgefield/Ridgefield) smashed three kills in a five-point span to give Stockton a 20-17 lead but Kean responded to tie at 24. After a Cougar error, setter Faith Hoagland (Demarest/Northern Valley Demarest) snuck in a kill to give the Ospreys the set at 26-24.
 
The third frame saw Kean battle back to tie at 20-20, before closing with a 5-2 finish to win 25-22. Stockton then dominated the final set as Schuele spiked five of her kills in the runaway 25-11 final frame.
 
In addition to Schuele's big night, Kovacs was the only other Osprey in double figures with 12 spikes. Jessica Ciandella (Beachwood/Roselle Catholic) dished 25 assists followed by Hoagland with a career-high 23 helpers.
 
Rebecka Zabilowicz (Belmar/Red Bank Regional) paced the back-row defense with 23 digs while freshman Sarah Walsh (Flemington/Hunterdon Central) scooped a career-high 14 digs and added two blocks. Idi Uffen (Williamstown/Williamstown) notched four blocks while Lara adde three.
 
Brett Harper led Kean with 11 kills, with Kendall Sonico dishing a match-high 35 assists. Juliana Romero topped three Cougars in double digits in digs with 17.
 
Stockton will host the Osprey Classic this weekend. On Saturday, Stockton will face Eastern at 10 am, then take on Widener at noon.
