Galloway, NJ – Stockton University (12-4) split its two matches on the first day of the Osprey Classic at The Sports Center. Stockton went toe-to-toe with unbeaten #10 Eastern University (13-0) but was nipped in the fifth set for a 21-25, 25-19, 25-17, 21-25, 15-13 setback. The Ospreys then topped Widener (6-8) in four sets 25-21, 25-20, 19-25, 25-17.
The showdown with Eastern was a rematch of last year's NCAA Tournament match in which the Ospreys knocked off the Eagles in five sets to reach the NCAA third round for the first time ever. In this contest,
Idi Uffen (Williamstown/Williamstown) led Stockton with 12 kills and six blocks while
Sarah Walsh (Flemington/Hunterdon Central) tallied 10 kills.
Jessica Ciandella (Beachwood/Roselle Catholic) and
Faith Hoagland (Demarest/Northern Valley Demarest) dished 24 and 15 assists respectively.
Rebecka Zabilowicz (Belmar/Red Bank Regional) scooped a match-high 24 digs and served three aces.
Lindsay Schuele (Sparta/Sparta) contributed 16 kills and five blocks.
Uffen tied her career high with 16 kills to lead Stockton to victory over Widener.
Stephanie Kovacs (Allentown, PA/Central Catholic) spiked 12 kills and Schuele chipped in with 10 kills plus nine digs. Ciandella tallied 25 assists and 11 digs while Hoagland handed out 21 assists and Zabilowicz snagged 13 digs.
Stockton will continue hosting the Osprey Classic tomorrow. The Ospreys will play Haverford at 10 a.m. and #22 Mary Washington at 2 p.m.
