Stockton Rally Falls Short in 2-1 Setback

Boxscore

Galloway, NJ – Stockton University (6-3) fought gamely during the second half but came up short as Widener University (5-3) downed the Ospreys 2-1 on Tuesday night. Kellie Brining (Cherry Hill/Cherry Hill West) tallied the only marker for Stockton on the evening as the Ospreys dropped their second consecutive game.

The Pride scored a goal in each half, starting with Kayla Herr with an unassisted tally 12:19 into the game. Widener struck again 5:30 into the second period on Eliza Newlin's marker for a 2-0 lead before Stockton picked up the offense.

Leah Davies (Ocean City/Ocean City) took a long pass, broke toward the net and then found Brining for the easy tap in to close the margin to 2-1 with 15:15 remaining. The goal was Brining's second of the season while Davies notched her team-leading sixth assist.

Stockton pressed for the equalizer down the stretch but to no avail. The Ospreys outshot Widener 17-6 and held a 13-5 advantage on penalty corners in the game but came up on the short end, 2-1.

Stockton goalkeeper Emily Sorochynskyj (Boonton/Boonton) made just one save on the night. Mikayla Ninos kicked out eight shots to keep the Ospreys at bay and earn her fifth win of the season for Widener.

Stockton will take to the road for their NJAC opener at #14 Montclair State on Saturday at 1 p.m.
