Galloway, NJ – Stockton University (9-7, 4-6 NJAC) fought gamely but could not overcome the hot shooting of #13 Ramapo College (16-1, 10-1 NJAC) and dropped an 89-81 decision on Saturday afternoon. The Ospreys honored long-time head coach Gerry Matthews at halftime, dedicating the court in his name.
Stockton started strong in front of a packed house, jumping out to a quick 11-4 lead.
Marcus Harmon (Whitesboro/Middle Twp.) scored nine of the markers during the spurt before the Roadrunners got going. A 16-9 run by the visitors tied the game at 20-20 with 9:45 left in the first half.
The teams traded baskets the rest of the half, with consecutive dunks by freshman
Steve Ferebee (Galloway/Absegami the biggest highlights for Stockton.
Brandon Hamilton (Camden/Paulsboro) tied the game at 34 before a late free throw gave Ramapo a 35-34 edge at the break.
The second half was more of the same, with 16 lead changes in the first nine minutes. The Ospreys knotted the game for the eighth time at 64-64 on a
Khaliq Ford (Millville/Millville) layup with 7:33 left in regulation. Two foul shots by
Maurice Hart (Asbury Park/Asbury Park) made it 66-all with 6:59 left but Stockton could not pull ahead.
The Roadrunners outscored Stockton 19-10 to give them a comfortable margin at 85-76 with a minute to play. Ramapo shot 10-14 from the free throw line during a span of over five minutes, to stretch the advantage and down the Ospreys 89-81.
Darius Jerkins (Somers Point/Mainland) tied his career high with 16 points and blocked five shots to lead four Stockton players in double figures. Harmon added 14 markers and a game-high 10 rebounds, while Hart and
Tom Catanoso (Cape May CH/Middle Twp.) chipped in with 12 and 11 points respectively. Catanoso also dished a game-high five assists.
Stockton pilfered 15 steals on the afternoon led by
Brandon Hamilton (Camden/Paulsboro) and
Steve Ferebee who swiped four steals each. The Ospreys kept the game close by shooting 18-22 (81.8%) from the charity stripe.
Six Roadrunners scored in double figures with Thomas Bonacum leading the way with 18 points. James Long added 16 markers while Sultan Aminu scored 15 points. Josh Ford tallied 12 points, with Christopher Mosely and Patrick Peterson scoring 10 points each. Ramapo shot 53.8% (28-52) on the day to send Stockton to the defeat.
Stockton will travel to The College of New Jersey on Wednesday for an NJAC game at 6 p.m.
